Gourmet bread that Coles claimed was “baked today, sold today” was actually made in Ireland, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has alleged in the Federal Court. Some of the items were frozen, reheated and then sold as “freshly baked in-store”, “baked today, sold today”, or were from “Coles Bakery”, the ACCC alleged.

The bakery products were either made in Ireland or had been initially baked in different locations in Australia, court documents showed.

The ACCC claims Coles’ advertising and logos contained “false, misleading and deceptive” claims about their bakery products, which could result in fines of up to $1.1 million per offence under Australian Consumer Law.

[New South Wales] Fair Trading has received a number of reports of an Irish male going by the name of John and using the unregistered company name Affordable Building Services touting for business throughout the inner Sydney area including North Bondi, Surry Hills and Marrickville.

“Itinerant conmen are ruthless and will often seek out the most vulnerable – the elderly, the infirm or those struggling financially – to siphon off thousands of dollars,” Mr Stowe said.

“They pose as affable tradies, promising home building and maintenance work at unbelievably cheap rates and then demanding scurrilously high deposits. They then either abscond with the deposit or carry out the work to such a poor level it invariably costs the home owner thousands of dollars more to have the work rectified.”

He was asked by Committee member David O’Brien about Fr Paul Ryan a paedophile who was moved from parish to parish.

O’Brien: “Was there awareness of Ryan’s sexual problems from early on?”

Bishop Connors: ”Yes.”

O’Brien: “Was there persistent conduct in not warning parishioners?”

Bishop Connors: ”I can’t comment.”

O’Brien: “Was there a persistent determination to retain him despite the high risk?

Bishop Connors: ”Yes.”

O’Brien: “Was there a persistent disregard for victims?”

Bishop Connors: ”Yes.”

O’Brien: “There hasn’t been any investigation or explanation of how a priest like Ryan could be shifted around?”

Bishop Connors: ”No.”

O’Brien: “The church has effectively facilitated child sex offences by leaving known offenders in place?”

Bishop Connors:”I agree with that.”

O’Brien: “Very unChrist-like, isn’t it?”

Bishop Connors: ”Absolutely.”
