Yesterday

Drumcondra, Dublin 9.

Lord Mayor of Dublin, Micheal MacDonncha unveiled a plaque in honour of Bang Bang (Thomas Dudley) at the site of his grave in St. Josephs Graveyard.

Bang Bang referred to the key as his Colt 45 and would roam the city ‘shooting’ bystanders. Many acted as if they had been slain.

The idea for the memorial came from brother and sister Grace and Daniel Lambert, who run the Bang Bang Café in Phisborough,

In fairness.

He terrorised delighted Dubliners with rambunctious key-wielding faux gun play.

But where is Bang Bang commemorated?

Daniel and Grace, of Bang Bang café and grocers,, write:

We visited Thomas Dudley’s (Bang Bang’s) grave recently in Drumcondra and we were really shocked to find he never got a gravestone. For a man who brought so much joy to his city we think this is wrong so we are going to fix that.

We plan to have a beautiful key shaped gravestone made and erected for Thomas. We’re happy to cover the cost ourselves but people said they’d like to contribute so we’ll take donations for the next two weeks for anyone who’d like to help. We’ll make up the difference.

We’re also working on a We’re also working on a ceremony that we’ll have to remember Bang Bang and unveil the gravestone…

In fairness.

I just brought out a book with New Island, entitled ‘D’You Remember Yer Man?’ I’m attaching two pictures from the launch – one of the actual key that Bang Bang used (top) to shoot thousands of Dubliners, and one of myself (left) with Ruan van Vliet (who illustrated the book) & Aidan Walsh (centre), aka The Master of the Universe (one of only three living people who feature in the book). The book is available from all good bookshops in Ireland, and also available online from New Island Books, Amazon, The Book Depository, etc.
