1. Oh, you know this one… Wealthy businessman (Jamie Foxx) rescues a young girl (Quvenzhané Wallis) from an orphanage run by a nasty piece of work (Cameron Diaz)?

2. Reeks of something to do with the kids over Christmas when all other possibilities are exhausted. Like the Jedward Panto. Or defrosting the freezer.

3. Expect lessons to be learned, obstacles to be overcome and everyone to grow a little from the experience. With songs… so many songs.

4. Quvenzhané follows Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012) and 12 Years a Slave (2013) with this? Sheesh.

5. Spike Lee should consider rebooting The Wiz (1978) with Jennifer Lawrence as Dorothy, Steve Buscemi as the Scarecrow and Jack Black as the Lion.

What you may need to know:

1. A low level tech in a large company creates the first Artificial Intelligence robot with the ability to think and feel. The robot is named Chappie and he learns from his surroundings, some good, some bad.

2. It’s Neill Blomkamp’s third film after the excellent District 9 (2009) and the awful Elysium (2013).

3. Sharlto Copley is obviously included. He is the voice of Chappie.

4. Copley met Blomkamp when Blomkamp was 16 and just finished school. Copley provided Blomkamp with use of his agency to help with pitches for various projects and computers to help Blompkamp with his design and animation work.

5. Die Antwoord of Enter the Ninja fame help to up the weirdness. Coincidentally they released their latest track Ugly Boy on the same day as the trailer.

6. Broadsheet Prognosis: The Zef is strong in this one.

What you may need to know:

1. The minions get their own movie! Three must embark on a long journey to find their minion race a new evil master. A hungry one, a nervous one and a brave one.

2.  Lord of the Rings (2001) in dungarees.

3. Minions stole the show in the Despicable Me (2010) and Despicable Me 2 (2013) films earning themselves this spin-off. Despicable Me 2 alone took in $841 million. The original gathered a mere $543 million.

4. “without a master they had no purpose…If this went on much longer they would surely perish” Kant couldn’t have said it better himself.

5. Illumination Entertainment are running the show for Universal. The Illumination credo is “strict cost controls and hit animated films are not mutually exclusive“.

6. Sandra Bullock, Steve Carell and Jon Hamm can’t have come cheap.

What you may need to know:

1. After killing Owen Shaw on the worlds longest airstrip, Dom and the gang are able to return to the United States. However Shaw’s older brother is seeking revenge, putting the entire crew in danger once more.

2. Universal have also released 7 seconds of stunts and 7 seconds of grunts for your enjoyment.

3. This is the first film in the franchise to take place after the aberration that was Tokyo Drift (2006). Some things are best left in the past.

4. After the death of Paul Walker in a car accident, his two brothers Caleb and Cody acted as body doubles for some scenes.

5. Brian O’Connor is meant to be retired rather then killed off which is nice.

6. James Wan of Billy the Puppet and Saw (2004) fame steps into his second franchise and directs.

What you may need to know:

1. Young coder Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson) is selected to participate in an experiment by evaluating the human qualities of a breakthrough in artificial intelligence created by Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac).

2. This is Alex Garland’s first film as director, having previously written The Beach (2000), 28 Days Later (2002) and Sunshine (2007).

3. @1:31 – where do the batteries go?

4. The US trailer is a little more spoilerific. A little too spoilerific to be honest.

5. The next time Gleeson and Isaac will appear together will be in something called Star Wars: Episode VII. Nope – me neither.

6. Broadsheet Prognosis: Blade Runner (1982) meets Her (2013).

What you may need to know:

1. After a couple meet at a gathering to watch a meteor shower, their relationship is told through 5 different random stories.

2. As any ambitious comedy romance film shot across parallel universes would, it is dividing critics.

3. Doesn’t Justin Long look like a cleaner living Anthony Kiedis?

4. Long is a mac.

5. Long and co-star Emmy Rossum are also listed as executive producers. Guess that means they didn’t get paid.

What you may need to know:

1. The Sci-Fi masterpiece has a brand spanking new trailer. Well, a re-cut anyway.

2. It is the first new trailer for the film in 40 years. And much better then the original.

3. It was commissioned by Warner Bros. and the British Film Institute and created by London’s Ignition Creative.

4. The new trailer marks  the re-release of the film on November 28 as part of the British Film Institute’s “Sci-Fi: Days of Fear and Wonder” season. The viewing will also feature a followup panel featuring stars Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood.

5. Other films featured in BFI’s sci-fi celebration include Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange (1971), 1984 (1984), Brazil (1985) and Barbarella (1968).

Insidious 3

What you may need to know:

1. Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) uses her psychic abilities to help a teenage girl targeted by a dangerous supernatural entity.

2. That kid isn’t doing the whole retro chic thing with her T-Mobile Sidekick. This is a prequel set before the first two movies.

3. Insidious (2010) & Insidious 2 (2013) screenwriter Leigh Whannell takes over directing duties from James Wan.

4. Dylan McDermott takes over freakin’ out duties from Rose Byrne and Patrick Wilson.

5. If you want truly terrifying, look no further than Lin Shaye’s turn as the freaky landlady in Kingpin (1996).

6. Broadsheet Prognosis: Boo. Repeat etc.

What you may need to know:

1. Mark Wahlberg is a college professor with a gambling problem. He borrows heavily from the mob  in an effort to win big.

2. The trailer is NSFW and full of fupps.

3. It’s a remake of the 1974 film of the same name starring James Caan. The original is pretty badass.

4. Talking of badass, it’s a bald John Goodman. He’s come a long way from King Ralph (1991).

5. Wahlberg lost 27 kg to play the role. He also attended university lectures and read bukes  so he could understand all the literary references his character makes in the film.

6. This will always be Mark Wahlberg’s best work however. (Wahlberg does not like this clip at all)

7. The screenplay is by William Monahan who wrote the brilliant The Departed (2006).

8. It’s going on limited release before the Oscars deadline and then worldwide in the New Year. They reckon there’s a chance!
