The magnificent Ger Eaton.

And his beautifully mad pad.

Donal Moloney writes:

I met Ger a few weeks ago. He fronts a band called ‘The Carnival Brothers‘ [you may recall  last Summer’s The Sun Is Gonna Shine]. Ger is as cool as his home in Celbridge [Co Kildare]. His house is a joy to behold and the attention to detail is stunning. He’s also a top bloke.

The rush of urbex.

Nothing like it.

Donal Moloney writes:

Fear, panic, danger, excitement, adrenaline, anticipation and elation are just some of the words that best describe the peculiar lure of Urbex.
Discovering an abandoned building for the first time can feel something like this…It’s an unwritten rule amongst Urbex and Rurex explorers never to divulge (even to each other) where they find their locations.
There are many reasons for this, not least it leaves the location a mystery for the next Urbex/Rurex person to discover.Often, the hunt for these places is as much fun as the kill. Also, were everyone to know where these places are and how access was gained, it could cause legal problems for the explorer and vandalism at the location.
Urbex/Rurex explorers also have a rule that nothing is ever removed or damaged on the premises. Obviously this location has been trashed but many other places are in really good condition.

A touch of urbex in Mulgrave Street, Limerick.

Photographer Donal Moloney writes:

Limerick Lunatic Asylum was founded in 1827. It was originally built to accommodate 150 patients. “Lunatics”, “imbeciles” and “idiots” as they would have been described by the authorities of the day, the asylum had 337 patients. By 1848 its population exploded to over 1,000 and kept growing. Ireland was the first nation to legislate for the provision of facilities for the mentally ill, and as such the Asylum stands as one of the first large institutions for the insane in the western world. In 1959 the complex became better known as St Joseph’s Hospital. Much of it today is lying derelict.

A behind the scenes look at Donal Moloney’s Sinéad O’Connor shoot.

Donal sez:

“This was the first of two great days craic shootin with Sinéad. Originally, this was planned as just a selection of promo shots for her new album but the record company liked the shots a lot and pulled the original cover to use one of these…subsequently Sinéad renamed the album “I’m not Bossy, I’m the Boss’.”
