Minister for Education Ruairi Quinn has said he expects Health Minister James Reilly to brief the Cabinet tomorrow on the fast-tracking of hospital projects in the constituencies of two colleagues.
Opposition parties have questioned how the two ministers [Phil Hogan and Brendan Howlin] concerned were able to announce the work before it had been formally approved by the Health Service Executive Board. However, the Government has said the projects were decided by the HSE.

Gwan out of that.

The incest case?

Mr Kenny said he accepted the ruling by Ceann Comhairle Sean Barrett that it was not open to him to refer to the nature and extent of the sentence imposed.

Pensions?

Taoiseach Enda Kenny refused to be drawn on the high pensions paid to former taoisigh and ministers when questioned about it in the Dáil.

Meanwhile, two years ago:

INCOMING Taoiseach Enda Kenny is asking for a “gigantic leap of faith” from the Irish people to trust their government and political leaders to write a new chapter in the country’s history

In an often philosophical speech, he said: “For the next four years, let us be mindful of our duty and our responsibility during the period of the next government, and above all, in the midst of what is for many a national heartbreak, let us be mindful of each other.”

Good times.

They can’t quit each other.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny on Health Minister James Reilly  to RTÉ’s Fran McNulty on RTÉ Radio One’s This Week yesterday.

Fran McNulty: “The main question I’m asking is: Do you think James Reilly is doing a good job?

Enda Kenny: “Yes, I do.”

McNulty: “You do? Yet, despite, you still feel the need to work with him more closely which, in your own words, means you want to make sure he achieves standards.”

Kenny: “Minister Reilly has an enormous work to do. And it’s not just about Minister Reilly. He’s operating on behalf of Government but with Ministers of State (Kathleen) Lynch and (Alex) White, and that trio are leading the structural changes that need to be made in the area of health together now, with the implementation of the Health Service Executive plan. What I can say about Minister Reilly is this, that he has always had a genuine, personal concern for putting patients first.
“And we set out, in this programme for Government, to introduce universal health insurance at the end of our programme. This is a long and challenging road but remember it is about providing the very best service and attention for people who need it, based on their medical requirements, as distinct from what they’ve got in their pocket. So, of all of the hills to be climbed here, health is one that remains challenging. And it’s one that I’m going to help the minister and his team, and all of those involved in the health area, to implement. To see that we can actually achieve what we want to achieve.”

Taoiseach Enda Kenny yesterday told an important group of politicians in Bavaria that a deal on bank legacy debt would be a one-off for Ireland and would not set a precedent.

So we’re clear on that, then?

CSU officials declined to comment in detail on ongoing bank debt talks, though CSU leader Horst Seehofer said it was important to agree “the necessary additional measures to ensure reform success”.

“As long as they stick to their reform path, it’s justified to support boosting jobs and growth,” he said.

Yup.

“In the other side of the argument, in regard to the inclusion of suicide, there are no regulations there. It will be the duty of Government, in working with people, to put in a clarification and restrictions that this does not in anyway become abortion on demand or that abortion is seen as a form of contraception.”

A beaming Paddy McGuinness (left) and Enda Kenny at the Royal College of Physicians, Dublin, last night.

Paddy is a former Fine Gael whip on Mayo County Council and a close friend and supporter of the Taoiseach’s for more than 20 years.

In a happy coincidence Paddy has been appointed (by Phil Hogan) as chairman of the  Western Development Commission, a statutory body (Quango) responsible for “operating the €32 million Western Investment Fund (WIF) to provide loans and equity to business and local communities throughout the region”.

That’s why Enda looks so surprised and the guy in the middle looks so happy.
