Last week, with a €25 Golden Discs voucher on offer, I asked you for your favourite album track that you felt should have been released as a single but never was.
You answered in your tens.
But there could be only one winner.
Third Place:
This Is The One by Stone Roses
Rosette of Sirius writes:
That self-titled debut album, like Hunky Dory is one of the few records where every track could have been a singe. It’s a masterpiece and this track hits me in the feels every time I hear it….
Runner-up:
Lover, You Should’ve Come Over by Jeff Buckley
Random Noise writes:
From Grace. Just heartbreaking, and in register that I can sing along to in the car.
Winner:
Another Town, Another Train by ABBA
Slightly Bemused writes:
‘From the album Waterloo. As a kid, it evoked in me a sense of wanderlust, and exploration. I was too young, and the themes of not settling and even of abandoning everything and everyone went right over my head.
…Over the years, I have hummed this in my head as I went from airport to airport in a lifestyle that in some ways mimicked both my childhood dreams and the theme of the song…
…A short while ago I realised I was still constantly reusing the same clothes from the suitcase I came home in, nearly 2 years ago now, just rewashing them as needed and stacked on a chair. Despite my wardrobe being full, just as described in this song….
…The song is also one of the few where Bjorn was the lead singer, with the ladies on vocals….
Last week with a tanned €25 Golden Discs on offer, I asked you for your favourite song about being on holidays or to play/sing along with while you’re on holiday.
You chimed in in your tens.
But there could be only one winner.
Third Place:
Karakoy by Brazilian Girls
Songs, Spoofing And Spliffs writes:
It takes you on a walk and skip along its namesake streets in Istanbul, with Sabina Sciubba’s vocals overpowering the soft-washed trumpets when the chorus arrives.
A simple song but misleading, its a story,of walking and missing in one the worlds greatest cities. It’s a sunny little novella of pain written sharply with enough nuance to make you start a few teary daydreams…This is a live version from Colorado Public Radio’s OpenAir.
Runner-up:
Cups by Anna Kendrick
Slightly Bemused writes:
‘When visiting my daughter after that film came out, she used love to sing that song on car rides as we travelled between locations. A four hour drive from the town she lived in to the one where she was born to visit her grandparents could be filled with several renditions.
Maybe as it came on the radio, or maybe as she practised the rhythm section on the dashboard (thank god for large American cars, and sincere apologies to the rental company cleaning crew).
Of course when I tried to accompany in vocal section, my little lovely darling who is blessed with perfect pitch (pun intended) she would correct me. I now know the correct places to put the little ‘uh-ohs’ and how to put the right nasal sound to the words. My daughter was very particular about the details!
It has been a while – she is in college now, and Cups is no longer her favourite song. But I still sing it, even if it is only in my head whenever I travel.’
Winner:
Hot In Here by Nelly
Italia 90 writes:
‘I was on hols in Lanzarote in 2002. I’m just after getting divorced. Brand new GF, intelligent and witty af, never a dull moment. She booked us on a catamaran day trip/booze cruise.
It’s full of Irish nurses and the ratio was 5 or 6 to 1? Mighty session all afternoon and we continued at a little bar in the harbour, tequila cocktails and shots.
One of the little nurses was flirtin like mad and before things got messy, I was in a taxi back to the Fariones. Went for a bit to eat, then up to the apartment.
Low and behold, there in front of our door was the flirty nurse. Lying there on the mat, unconscious and butt naked.
The GF starts laughing, opens the door, steps over nursie, turns to me and says, – ‘that is your problem Captain’90, make sure she gets home’. Turns out they were staying in the same apartment complex and we must have mentioned which apartment we were staying in. Doh!
I ended up having to carry her two floors down and across to the other side of the complex and into one of the nurse’s rooms. The party was still going on and so I stayed for a few beers. Would have been rude not to.
The next time I see the flirty nurse, she’s on the Late Late Show. She had just won one of those blind wedding things and is in the audience being interviewed by Pat the Plank. The GF points her out to me and says, – ‘Look, there’s that mermaid you caught in Puerto del Carmen!’.
Last week, with a tipsy €25 Golden Discs voucher on offer, I asked you to name your favourite drinking song.
You answered in your belligerent tens.
But there could be only winner.
Third Place
I Wish I Was Still Drinking by Colin Hay
Mr P writes:
Usually when you hear a song that reminisces about bygone drinking days, it is often a song of regret and remorse, not this one!
Runner-up:
Limerick You’re A Lady by Sharyn Ward
Italia 90 writes:
I first heard this song in O’Sullivan’s in Crookhaven [County Cork] back in the summer of ’92 sung by the lovely Ann (one of the five Anns/Annes who used to comment on here regularly?) and to this day, it’s still my favourite pub song. Take it away Sharyn Ward! Can I also give a shameless plug to my godson in NY…
Winner:
A Pair Of Brown Eyes by The Pogues
Otis Blue writes;
‘And the arms and legs of other men were scattered all around. Some cursed, some prayed, some prayed then cursed…’. It should be the National Anthem.
I Did not know what to make of this, when I first heard it. His name, the song title and the lush strings really grated on my nerves. Just didn’t get it. The more I heard of him the more I liked his take on everything. Happy to now say I’m a huge fan of all Mr Tillman’s work, and I think I can see where he’s coming from….
I’ve always had an aversion to C+W music…probably because I’m rooted in Punk/Ska and my father used to be into it, would always have it’s whiney twangy assault on in the car or the living room and I hated him for all sorts of (resolved) reasons I’m not going to get into her, but you get the picture.
I also had mates at that time who would frequently nod appreciation for Johnny Cash (but only really because they believed it was a tosser nerdy NME subscriber badge wearer thing to do) but as it happens into my 30’s I mellowed to JC and at certain moments I’ll throw him on the deck (only JC mind no other C+W whine allowed!) I want thissong played at my funeral.
Last week, following my beloved Liverpool FC becoming champions of England after 30 years and with a €25 Golden Discs voucher as the goal, I asked you for your favourite song by a band or singer from Liverpool.
You answered in your tens.
But there could be only one winner.
Third Place:
Heart As Big As Liverpool by The Mighty Wah
Catherine Vaughan writes:
One of my favourite Liverpudlians (Pete Wylie). I might normally go for Story Of The Blues, but today, it can only be this…
Runner up:
A Day In The Life by The Beatles
YupYup writes:
THE greatest masterpiece has to be the best of Liverpool surely? The epic nature, the switches and ups and downs which lead to the final crescendo and the famous final chords are rather appropriate for all the Liverpool fans breathing one massive 30 year sigh of relief.
Winner:
There She Goes by The La’s
Bertie Blenkinsop writes:
I loved this song since before Liverpool won the League last time and I still love every single note of it, a lost genius Lee Mavers
Premier League-winning Liverpool FC fans celebrate outside Anfield, the club’s ground, last night
Please indulge me, dear readers.
It’s taken three long decades for Liverpool FC to climb back onto their perch as champions of England.
So naturally, as a lifelong fan, there could only be one theme for this week’s competition: What’s your favourite song by a band or singer from Liverpool?
To jog your memory, here’s a select list of Scousers who have put Merseyside on the music map: Gerry & The Pacemakers, Cilla Black, The Mop Tops, Wings, The Mighty Wah, Pink Industry, Echo & The Bunnymen, OMD, Teardrop Explodes, The Lotus Eaters, The La’s, Cast, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Atomic Kitten, Elvis Costello, Shack, Michael Head & The Strands, Plastic Ono Band…
In tribute to Herr Klopp and the Liverpool/German connection, here‘s my choice.
The best answer wins a delightful €25 Golden Discs voucher, to be chosen by my imaginary club mascot.
