Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic has been drawn in the lineup for the Australian Open, which begins on Monday, despite uncertainty over whether he will be allowed to remain in the country as the Australian government weighs canceling his visa after disputing his medical exemption to the country’s strict Covid-19 vaccine requirements.

According to the lineup, Djokovic—the men’s tennis world number one, top seed for the contest and returning champion—is set to open against fellow Serb Miomir Kecmanovic.

Djokovic’s participation in the tournament is not guaranteed, however, and Australian Immigration Minister Alex Hawke is still considering revoking the player’s visa.

Hawke is expected to announce a decision on Friday, according to the Sydney Morning Herald, which would likely force organizers to reshuffle the draw before the tournament begins on Monday.

Novak Djokovic is not being held captive in Australia, a top official says, as the men’s world number one tennis player faces deportation over Covid vaccination rules.

“He is free to leave at any time that he chooses to,” Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews said.

The Serb star remains in immigration detention in Melbourne after being denied entry on Wednesday.

A court challenge is due on Monday, a week before the Australian Open begins.

Now more uncertainty surrounds the schedule of the tournament that Djokovic has won nine times. A 10th win would see him become the men’s most successful player, with 21 Grand Slams.

ABC News is reporting that Czech player Renata Voracova also had her Australian visa cancelled on Friday and is being detained in the same immigration hotel.

Novak Djokovic faces further sleepless nights in detention as the nine-time champion’s Australian Open fate remains in legal limbo following the adjournment of his desperate court case against deportation.

The world No.1 is challenging the Australian government’s decision to cancel his visa, applying for a judicial review, and attempting to stave off deportation in the meantime.

Federal Circuit Court Judge Anthony Kelly on Thursday night said there was a delay in receiving the application for a review of the visa decisions and the temporary ban on Djokovic’s deportation.

“…attention can have many positive aspects and benefits in both the professional and private life, but can also create an additional burden. You have an influence on the youth, who look to you as a role model and wish to become like you one day.

“Additionally, it’s expected of you to offer your thoughts on topics that are beyond your own profession. I typically make an effort to keep a distance, although when I feel the urge to share my thoughts, I do so. I am someone who holds fast to principles, life values, human rights… That is something that has been abused in the past.”
