‘The Volunteers’ by Joe Caslin

Darragh Doyle writes

You may have seen some tweets or posts about the new artwork being put up this weekend in Dublin’s Trinity College Front Square.

It’s by artist Joe Caslin and when finished – which should be shortly, it will look like this…

The installation, called The Volunteers, is backed by Senator Lynn Ruane and Senator Aodhán Ó Ríordáin to coincide with their Controlled Drugs and Harm Reduction Bill 2017 currently being debated in the Seanad.

Gabriel Dawe is one of nine artists commissioned to create ‘room sized’ works for the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery in Washington this year.

This 5.8m hight work, stretching from the floor to the ceiling of the gallery and entitled ‘Plexus A1’, uses  9.7 kilometers of polyester sewing thread in 15 colours to represent the full spectrum of visible light.

Now for you.

LGBT activist Dale McDermott and Fine Gael Dublin City Councillor Noel Rock are proposing  a number of rainbow-coloured pedestrian crossings in Dublin City Centre to “further boost the LGBT credentials the city has achieved in recent years”.

In a submission to Dublin City Council, three specific locations have been outlined.

Dale, a former president of Young Fine Gael, writes:

“Three city centre locations where the Rainbow Walks could be installed that have significant meaning to the LGBT community in Dublin, ranging from George’s Street, outside City Hall and Pantibar on Capel Street. These locations all have their own story to tell and I have done my best to explain in my submission [link below to Dublin City Council how each location is viewed by the LGBT community.

Fight!
