Japanese artist, Motoi Yamamoto uses salt to create incredibly detailed, and deeply personal, floor sculptures which he calls his ‘Labyrinths’.
The latest, which required 50 hours and a metric tonne of salt, seeps out from a brick tunnel at the Fondation Espace Ecureuil, a gallery in Marseille.
Salt is a traditional symbol of purification and mourning in Japan, and Yamamoto’s work honours the memory of his sister, who died from brain cancer 10 years ago. The intricate patterns are meant to represent eternity.
