The annual Scotch Ram Market,

Dingle Sheep Market, Dingle, Co Kerry

Donal Moloney writes:

Once a year, battering Scotch rams with twisted horns and black and white faces butt heads as they await their moment of glory in the arena. “Best of show… best wool…1300 guineas…. 280 280 280…” bleats the MC. Young kids sit on dads shoulders with matching hoodies and wellies, mini me, older children perch themselves on the dividing walls between the pens and the arena afraid to miss any of the action. Deals are being struck and coats are being fluffed by owners who have travelled from far and near. Rams are bought and sold, next stop for them is their own field with 40 ewes to service over the winter months.

Wake up.

Sheep people.

Liamo writes:

While hiking around the Galty mountains last weekend I came across at least ten dead sheep and lambs with the carcasses left abandoned on the hills. Not one bore [any] sign of being attacked by dogs.
Wicklow hill-men who were with me said the sheep were likely dying of mineral deficiencies and that it cost more to safely dispose of the carcasses in accordance with health and safety and waste legislation than the sheep was worth.
I wondered whether some of your commenters would reassess their position in regards the welfare of hill sheep and the perceived dangers from dogs in light of this clear evidence of sheer neglect by their humans?

Seven month old wolf pup Lorne at animal rescue Camels And Friends in Arizona is introduced to a  ram of very specific temper as part of his socialisation. To wit:

Lorne is now five months old, coming on six. He has been introduced to sheep since he was seven weeks old and has been around the herd daily. Today, under strict supervision I decided to put him in with a semi-dominate ram to gauge his reaction to him. The reason I chose this ram was because he was dominate and willing to stand up to Lorne, but was not overly aggressive and dangerous to him (such as Octavian would have been). Likewise, most of the Ewes would have been a poor choice and triggered a flight response in the sheep, which then may have triggered a chase drive in Lorne, which could have resulted in his predatory nature kicking in- whether he meant the sheep harm or not.
