storm

Dude!

Ahead of tomorrow’s expected wavefest [graphic above].

Surf site Magic Seaweed write:

Right in the path of tomorrow’s swell we have one of the longest running monitoring stations providing wave data, the Sevenstones Light Vessel.

For this it’s typical to calculate what’s called a 50 or 100-year return period. This is simply the size of the largest waves you could expect will definitely occur at least once in that timeframe.

For the Sevenstones Light Vessel, with our long historic record, we can do this with some accuracy. In fact, analysis as early as the 1970s had already identified these values in the 36-40ft range.

Tomorrow’s storm is currently forecast to peak at 37ft in deep water around Western Cornwall. If these values are confirmed by the wave buoy tomorrow then we are looking at an event near that 50 year return period range – that is to say ‘infrequent’ but not necessarily ‘unusual’.

Buzzkill.

How BIG will they be in Ireland anyone?

Swell

MullaghmoreIt’s going to be “pumping”.

Surfworld Bundoran writes:

“Big swell coming for Ireland’s western and NW sea board over the coming weekend and into next week. Here is a shot of Mullaghmore from last year [above] to wet your appetite. The Forecast for swell looks mental. A few normal days of good swell in store before all hell breaks loose …Tomorrow (Thursday) will be nice clean offshore 4 ft…. Friday 3-4 ft and offshore…. Saturday 4-5 ft and offshore…. Sunday will be in the 20-25 ft range [top], Monday 10-15 ft, Tuesday 10 ft, wind will be factor on the big days with WSW wind, but if you know where to go it will be absolutely pumping!”

Sunday, October 21 will be remembered for a long time for those who witnessed the world class conditions under the Cliffs of Moher, Co Clare, Ireland.

From Magic Seaweed:

The swell came courtesy of Hurricane Rafael, a fast moving system which shot a powerful beam of condensed swell in an arc around the Atlantic basin. [Justine Dupont] The 21-year-old World Tour surfer travelled with the Billabong Adventure Division from her home in Lacanau, France to surf the big-wave spot.In the over-subscribed and unquantifiable “best ever” category, this barrel has got to rank up there in pure heft with any tube ridden by a female surfer in Europe.”That was an amazing day of surfing,” Dupont said afterwards. “It was more than a session, it was a mission. From getting smashed paddling out to surfing that perfect beautiful wave, it was a day I’ll never forget.”
