Further to the passing by a sub-committee of Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council of a proposal to change the name of Orwell Road to ‘Independent Ukraine Road’ ..

“…The proposal might well have some merit but I think that the way it’s been gone about is slightly unfortunate. I think it insinuates that if the residents of Orwell Road don’t want to change the name of the road then somehow they could be perceived as being not in solidarity with the people of Ukraine, and I think that’s not how you should do things.

“The residents of Orwell Road unanimously stand with the people of Ukraine in this terrible war, and we are all praying for peace today and hopefully the negotiations in Turkey will bring an end to a terrible conflict.”

Dr Ronan Collins, resident of Orwell Road, Dublin 6.

Via Reuters:

The United States denied renewed Russian accusations that Washington was operating biowarfare labs in Ukraine, calling the claims “laughable” and suggesting Moscow may be laying the groundwork to use a chemical or biological weapon.

Russia repeated its accusation of several years that the United States is working with Ukrainian laboratories to develop biological weapons. Such assertions in Russian media increased in the run-up to Moscow’s military move into Ukraine and were made as recently as Wednesday by foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova.

“The Russian accusations are absurd, they are laughable and you know, in the words of my Irish Catholic grandfather, a bunch of malarkey. There’s nothing to it. It’s classic Russian propaganda,” Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said on Wednesday.

Ukrainian father and daughter Mykola Marchenko and Olena Marchenko (above) joined fellow members of the Ukrainian community in Ireland outside the European Parliament Liaison Office calling on Irish people to support Ukrainian membership in the EU. Mykola arrived in Dublin from Ukraine on Sunday, to join Olena, who lives in Dublin.

European Union leaders will phase out buying Russian oil, gas and coal as Moscow’s war on Ukraine makes them realise they have to be less dependent on Russia, a draft declaration showed.

However, they are unlikely to offer Ukraine the fast EU membership it seeks.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin will join EU leaders in Versailles today and tomorrow, as Russia’s war against Ukraine, which Moscow calls a “special military operation”, enters its third week despite massive western sanctions.

St David’s Hall, Cardiff, Wales

This morning/afternoon.

The Cardiff Philharmonic has cancelled an all-Tchaikovsky programme as ‘inappropriate at this time’.

The orchestra says:

‘In light of the recent Russian invasion of Ukraine, Cardiff Philharmonic Orchestra, with the agreement of St David’s Hall, feel the previously advertised programme including the 1812 Overture to be inappropriate at this time. The orchestra hope you will continue to support them and enjoy the revised programme.’

Via Slipped Disc:

‘The concert included his decidedly apolitical second symphony, known as The Little Russian.

‘This is unutterably stupid. At the start of the First World War, the Proms conductor Sir Henry Wood informed the British government that he would continue performing Wagner and other Germans. The same rule prevailed in the Hitler war.

Only the Nazis ever banned Tchaikovsky.

‘Welcome to Cardiff 2022.’

Washington DC.

The US government’s Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland testified before a Senate Foreign Relation Committee hearing on Ukraine and said that the United States was working with Ukraine to prevent invading Russian forces from seizing biological ‘research material’.

Ms Nuland stated:

“Ukraine has biological research facilities, which in fact we are now quite concerned Russian troops, Russian forces, may be seeking to gain control of.”

The Russian Defence Ministry had stated that they had found evidence of US-funded Biolabs which had urgently destroyed samples of deadly pathogens when the ‘military operation’ started.
