Austria became the first country in Europe to introduce a national Covid-19 vaccine mandate for adults on Friday after President Alexander Van der Bellen signed it into law.

Austria’s sweeping measures will see those without a vaccine certificate or an exemption potentially slapped with initial fines of 600 euros. Checks to see if the mandate is being adhered to begin from March 15.

Pregnant people and those who cannot be vaccinated without endangering their health are exempt from the law, according to the Austrian Health Ministry’s website.

The exemption also applies to people who recently caught Covid-19, and lasts 180 days from the date they received their first positive PCR Covid-19 test.

The new law will last until January 31, 2024 and could see unvaccinated people face a maximum fine of 3,600 euros ( up to four times a year if they are not on a vaccine register by their assigned vaccination date.

1. The new initiative of the Austrian government to introduce fines for the unvaccinated to be introduced gradually is against the tide and is bonkers, unenforceable and has the distinct sense of a façade. Thus no compulsory vaccinations, as hitherto indicated, merely fines. But courts will be cluttered with such cases, and will they win? And what if you do not pay the fine?


2. No national emergency has been declared in Austria, thus the Austrian Constitutional Court will have to assess this in terms of a derogation non-applied for in Article 4 (Liberty) and Article 8 (Privacy) terms of the Austrian constitution. Since there is no emergency, the liberty right is particularly obvious and those who refuse to pay fines can invoke same and the Austrian Constitutional Court and lower courts should and will act accordingly to uphold their objections. Thus, the façade.

3. The problem is not whether you choose to be vaccinated, boosted, double vaccinated or not. The problem is one of a slippery slope to persecute those who exercise a choice and the precedent it sets for other measures. The problem is the authoritarian removal of legitimate choice.

4. If the science were clear that endless futuristic drugs would, for example, control Omicron then public health considerations in terms of legal doctrines such as proportionality would be apt but there is no clear evidence that warrants this conclusion.

5. The law has further the look of unrealistic enforceability in the extension till 2024 in the absence of a defined emergency which will lead to ongoing review by the courts.

6. Austrian and Australia should be compared to their former colonial or semi-colonial forebearers, though neither might like the comparison, the UK and Germany both of whom are not prepared to go this far. The best boy in the extremist class is also a post-colonial Irish hangover. The good burghers of the constitutional court will react accordingly, I am hopeful.

There is a narrow window — a month or two, maybe — for governments to declare “victory over the virus” and roll back their segregation systems, mask-wearing mandates, “vaccine” mandates, and the rest of the so-called “Covid restrictions.” Many governments are already doing so, England, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, Finland, Ireland, etc. They have seen which way the wind is blowing, and they are rushing to dismantle the New Normal in their countries before … well, you know, before a convoy of angry truckers arrives at their doors.

If they let that happen, they will find themselves in the unenviable position that Trudeau is now in. The Canadian truckers appear to be serious about staying there until their demands are met, which means Trudeau only has two options: (1) give in to the truckers’ demands, or (2) attempt to remove them by force. There’s already talk about bringing in the military. Imagine what an unholy mess that would be. Odds are, the military would disobey his orders, and, if not, the world would be treated to the spectacle of full-blown New Normal Fascism in action…’

In New York City, where a vaccine mandate for municipal workers is now in effect, 18 fire companies are out of service due to sick calls Monday, but no firehouses are closed and the mayor said there were no immediate disruptions to city services.

Nearly all New York City municipal workers, including police officers, firefighters and EMTs, had until 5 p.m. Friday to get at least one shot or be placed on unpaid leave, starting Monday. While the official deadline was Friday, those who got vaccinated over the weekend will not be placed on leave.

The percentage of FDNY employees who have received at least one dose increased to 80% from 78% on Saturday, and NYPD vaccination rates remained the same from the previous day, at 84%, according to the data.

New vaccination rates released by de Blasio’s office at 8 p.m. ET Sunday show that 11 of 44 city departments listed by the mayor increased by at least 1% since Saturday night.

As of Sunday night, 22,800 workers remain unvaccinated, according to the data. That’s down from 46,300 reported October 19, the day before the vaccine mandate was announced.

From Saturday night to Sunday night at least, 1,400 NYC employees received at least one dose, based on the data provided the mayor’s office.

American Airlines has canceled another 250 flights on Monday, continuing a days-long chain reaction of cancellations that started last week.

American says it canceled 1,058 flights on Sunday, or roughly one in every five of its originally scheduled flights. That was on top of the 548 flights it canceled on Saturday and 343 flights on Friday. Overall about 10% of its mainline flights have been canceled over the four-day period. The canceled flights have stranded tens of thousands of passengers.

In a memo, American COO David Seymour said the airline is “proactively canceling” flights to provide “scheduling certainty for our crews” after high winds and bad weather hit major hubs including Dallas-Fort Worth on Thursday, leaving flight crews out of position.
