Brazil’s health ministry said its website was hit on Friday by a hacker attack that took several systems down, including one with information about the national immunization program and another used to issue digital vaccination certificates.

The alleged hackers, calling themselves Lapsus$ Group” posted a message on the website saying that internal data had been copied and deleted. “Contact us if you want the data back,” it said, in an apparent ransomware attack.

The message, which included e-mail and Telegram contact info, had been removed by Friday afternoon, but the web page was still down, while user data in the ConectSUS app that provides Brazilians with vaccination certificates had disappeared.

The government put off for a week implementing new health requirements for travelers arriving in Brazil due to the attack.

Durham Cathedral, Durham, England

This afternoon.

Durham Cathedral is the only cathedral in England (so far) to make attendance at a public act of Christmas worship contingent on the production of an NHS Covid pass, under the pretext of ‘Keeping everybody safe‘.  By introducing this requirement, the Dean is ignoring the Church of England’s official guidance:

‘The Church’s position has been a clear policy of encouraging people to be vaccinated, but, other than in very exceptional circumstances, opposition to limiting access to church services or organisations on the basis of vaccine certification (also referred to as vaccine passports).

Such an approach would run contrary to the principle of the Church being a home and a refuge for all. Similarly, only in exceptional circumstances is the Church likely to utilise vaccine certification in order to facilitate additional services to its members or to the wider community, preferring to continue to emphasise existing mitigations.’

Couldn’t happen here.

Independent Clare TD Michael McNamara challenged the Minister for Justice Helen McEntee on the scientific basis for expanding vaccine passports.

Mr McNamara said:

“We know the vaccinated can efficiently transmit Covid-19, including to vaccinated people. That is the science and is generally accepted. What is the scientific rationale for continuing and expanding vaccination certificates? Is there a shred of evidence for this?

“It appears that there was no evidence in Wales. The matter was discussed in the Welsh Assembly. What evidence does the Government have to do that?

If there is no evidence, why are we doing it other than to deflect blame from a Government that has done nothing to address the capacity issues in our healthcare system?

“There are 95 people on trolleys in Limerick today. Over the past eight weeks, there were 27 outbreaks linked to hospitality, eight in gyms, six in hairdressers and 283 in healthcare settings. One might say the 95 people on trolleys are a result of the upturn in Covid, but that is not the case.

“On the hottest day this year, when there were only 95 people in the entire country in hospital with Covid-19, there were 49 people on trolleys in Limerick. The issue of overcrowding in Limerick is clearly exacerbated by, but not limited to, Covid. I discussed this issue with the Minister, Deputy Simon Harris, when he was Minister for Health. He promised the sun, moon and stars with regard to the elimination of overcrowding. Nothing has been done.

“Instead of dealing with the problems and lack of capacity in our healthcare system, the Government is focusing on increasing outdoor dining in the middle of winter and expanding a vaccine pass for which I have seen no evidence. If I am shown evidence for it I am willing to consider it, but I see none for it. That exemplifies what is wrong with our Covid response in this State and why we are failing.”

The National Public Health Emergency Team has recommended extending the use of Covid certificates to other areas outside of hospitality.

Via RTÉ News:

It is understood that NPHET does not specify where the certificates could be used, and any extension could require new legislation.

It is also understood that NPHET does not recommend the reimposition of social and economic restrictions for now, but warned that such a move cannot be ruled out in the future.

The recommendation was contained in a letter sent by NPHET to Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly yesterday.

In it, NPHET also strongly advised the Government that people work from home, where possible, and that employers be supportive of the move.

Via RTE News:

The Government is aiming to pass a single piece of legislation before Christmas that would combine the public health measures scheduled to expire on 9 February.

The measures include the requirement to wear masks in certain places and the rules around Covid passes for hospitality and international travel.

A Government spokesperson said the legislation is to ensure the State can react to the pandemic and Government would not look to have these additional powers for longer than necessary.

However, it does raise the possibility that the measures could be extended at some point beyond 9 February.

At the weekend

Outside Copper Face Jack’s, Harcourt Street, Dublin 2.

A bold, possibly unjabbed ‘reveller’ hopes to fool security staff with a Tesco Clubcard QR code posing as a Vax pass. His moustachioed friend, meanwhile, presents an entirely blank screen. Provocative.

Can the night possibly end well?

Only you can judge.

…a vax-injured nurse writes:

I write as one of the “anomalies” within the lifting of Covid 19 restrictions.

I received the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine and unfortunately had a severe reaction of myocarditis and pericarditis which is now a recognised side-effect.

I was one of a tiny percentage who had adverse reactions in a very successful vaccine programme. I continue to slowly recover. I am a nurse and know how essential this vaccine programme is to protect each other and protect our health service. I believe that anyone who can take the vaccine has a responsibility to do so.

As I cannot take the second dose I do not have a Covid pass and cannot enter a coffee shop or restaurant until next February.

I am in a small group of people who cannot take the vaccine on medical advice. We have been forgotten about and placed in the same group as the people who have “chosen” not to take the vaccine.

A letter from one’s doctor and a negative antigen test should surely be considered for this small group of people.

…Mr Donnelly said that Government figures show that one in three pubs and restaurants are not correctly checking for Covid passes at the door.

He said that this is “not acceptable” and that this cohort needs to “step up” during the winter.

“The survey results I have and the enforcement data we have both say the same thing, that about two in every three pubs or restaurants are enforcing and that one in three is not. That is not OK, it is not acceptable for that one in three,” he told reporters.
