Enemies – playing ArcTangent festival in August
What you may need to know…
01. Wicklow math-rock four-piece Enemies have been knocking about for the bones of the past decade now, making all manner of bright and fanciful noises. They’ve toured the world in the process, including sold-out shows in New York and Tokyo.
02. Currently resident on Topshelf Records, the band were formerly part of the much-missed Richter Collective, on which debut album We’ve Been Talking was released. Follow-up effort Embark, Embrace is arguably one of the best Irish records of recent years.
03. Streaming above is the video for most recent single Play Fire, taken from their upcoming third LP. Directed by Finn Keenan, it’s a fairly handsome piece of cinematography.
04. If you’re hankering for more, they did a live session for Chicago music channel Audiotree in April. Stream it in full, along with interviews, here.
05. Next appearing at ArcTangent, Europe’s leading fest for all things instrumental, noisy and/or in odd timings, happening August 18-20 in Bristol. Among the frankly insane line-up are fellow Irish soundscapers Alarmist.
Verdict: Play Fire represents a turn to broader strokes and a poppier feel. It suits their more blissed-out moments of old, and this next LP might well be the one that puts them in front of a wider audience.
God is an Astronaut – rescheduled Dublin date & Cork date
What you may need to know…
01. With a career spanning nearly fifteen years and nigh-on grandfather status in the post-rock genre, Glen of the Downs’ favourite sons God is an Astronaut have continued to evolve and innovate.
02. One of the country’s most successful musical exports of the past two decades, the band last year announced a new deal with metal label Napalm Records, and subsequent worldwide touring.
03. Their most recent album, Helios/Erebus, is streaming in its entirety in the widget above, and available for download on its own, or in a frankly fantastically-priced bundle alongside the rest of their discography to date.
04. Before heading to North America throughout September, the band have two Irish shows: a rescheduled date for Whelan’s in Dublin on July 2nd, and Cork’s Cyprus Avenue on the 23rd.
Verdict: A phenomenal band that carry over all of their spacey, yet intricate sonic adventuring to their live show. Seldom seen in these parts anymore, and unmissable when they are.

Solar Bears – Wild Flowers
What you may need to know…
01. Released a week or two ago by Rob da Bank’s independent label Sunday Best, Wild Flowers marks the return after a three-year hiatus of Dublin/Wicklow electronica duo Solar Bears.
02. Comprised of Rian Trench and John Kowalski, the duo have previously been signed to the Planet Mu label, with publishing through legendary electronic label Warp. They’re currently preparing their third full-length, Advancement, due on Friday March 18.
03. The Wild Flowers vid was directed by Michael Robinson, who’s previously done promos for Bibio, The Go! Team, and Ronika.
04. To make up for their extended live absence, and to prepare for said upcoming LP, the lads have recorded a fantastic live set of nearly an hour’s worth of new material, for Boiler Room’s Upfront sessions. Stream and download it for free.
Verdict: Simply put: welcome back, Solar Bears. We’ve missed you. Now hurry on and get the new LP out.
T-Woc – Jetstar Vol. II E.P.
Here’s what you might need to know:
1. Producer from Wicklow releasing through Limerick’s The Unscene label, responsible for putting out some of the cream of Irish hip-hop in recent years.
2. Wonky, bassy, dubby instrumental hip-hop with a gentle tinge of psychedelia and noise. “On a bit more of a tropical tip these days”, says himself.
3. Supported Eek-A-Mouse on Irish tour, and has produced an acclaimed mix for All City Records, among other things.
4. New E.P. Jetstar Vol. II came out this week on The Unscene’s Bandcamp page, available for streaming and download in the platform’s usual ridiculous array of formats.
5. This release was preceded with the first ever press release your writer has ever received that has been written entirely in the form of dialogue.
Verdict: Dig in. Quality, quirky, dubby instrumentalness that’s well worth a lash.
