Peak time DARTs normally operate with a mix of 8-carriage, 6-carriage and 4-carriage trains. The effect of this issue will be that most DARTs will operate as a 4-carriage train, and a small number will operate as a 2-carriage train.  We apologise for the inconvenience caused.

This is due to a refusal by drivers to carry out a coupler check before DART trains leave the depot to enter service.

This check verifies that an electrical connection is complete through the train when multiple DART units are connected together.  It has been necessitated by a number of incidents in which drivers received false indications on door interlocking.

The check is temporary in nature, as a modification is to be carried out to the fleet which will address the issue.  Drivers had been carrying out the check since its introduction last month. However, following SIPTU indicating, outside of agreed procedures, that it would no longer cooperate with this check, they are not being carried out by drivers today resulting in shorter trains.

bikeA Merida Big Nine.

Survived Africa.

Nicked in Blackrock.

Shane Gillen writes:

My bike – a Merida Big Nine TFS100 – was stolen from Blackrock [Co Dublin]  DART station over the weekend. They used acid to break through the locks.

I recently returned from an overseas leprosy-aid trip to Africa with my charity TASC, where we cycled 750km between different leprosy outcast villages and homes for the dying. This bike brought me safely across and through tough terrain and times, and so is hugely sentimental. It was gifted to me for the leprosy aid trip by Flanagan’s Cycles in Sligo. Desperately want it back, reward for its safe return. Thanks.

Irish workers helping with the [post earthquake] rebuild are sharing the love but it seems they may also be helping to spread sexual diseases.

While there are no concrete figures to analyse who is giving chlamydia to whom, health data show the number of confirmed cases in the Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) region has been increasing since 2011.

Board sexual health director Edward Coughlan said the clinic had started recording the number of Irish nationals making appointments, and there had “definitely been an increase” in the past two years.

Christchurch Hospital’s emergency department and the sexual health clinic had since started recording the nationalities of all people associated with the rebuild.

Figures for other international workers were not yet available.

…CDHB member Aaron Keown said New Zealand historically had high rates of STIs but guessed it would be local women passing infections on to rebuild workers and not the other way around.

“Statistically Kiwi women have been found to have a lot more sexual partners than other women [in other countries] and these Irish lads might not be used to living somewhere with such high STI rates.”

He said many women found the Irish accent alluring and “jovial and outgoing” rebuild workers were cashed up and going out regularly.

“If you take one plus one plus one, you get three and that would likely end up as chlamydia.”
