-3-1-2The Big(gish) Wheel, Dun Laoghaire.

Flip flopped down to the Carlisle Pier for a spot of Big Wheel on Saturday. Superb views over Dun Laoghaire harbour & Dublin Bay on yet another great day. Surely the greatest Irish summer holliers we’ve had since we were childers in the heatwave of 1976?

“Dear Broadsheeters,

“While playing a gig at the Twisted Pepper [Middle Abbey Street, Dublin] on Friday night, my bass shorted out in the middle of the show. After checking all equipment, the executive decision was for the band to play on while another bass was sourced.

Josh, the incredibly resourceful and professional sound engineer, called a friend in a studio across the Liffey asking if he could bring one across.

Whilst going outside to make another call, he spotted a kid walking by with a bass on his back. Josh asked him if he could borrow it for the duration of the set, and the kid agreed. He raced in and gave it to me, it worked perfectly and I got to finish the show.

I never got to meet or thank the kid in question, he was too young to get into the venue, and waited outside. Dublin is a small place, and if there is any chance that any of you know who that person was, I would really like to get in touch. If that never comes to pass, I hope you’ll join me in wishing that many good things come that young man’s way.”

“A plan designed by the Central Bank to help overstretched borrowers with multiple loans has been thrown into temporary disarray by the unexpected withdrawal of the Money Advice and Budgeting Service (Mabs) from the scheme.”

“Following a competition between three bidders, Mabs, in conjunction with IT services company OSG, was to take a key role in a three-month pilot programme to try out the proposed scheme.”

“However, having won the competition and having responded in writing to the Central Bank two weeks ago in positive terms, the agency wrote to the Central Bank again last week, saying it would not be taking the role.”

“It is understood the Central Bank does not know the reason for the volte-face and is very surprised. A spokesman would not comment yesterday and calls to a spokesman for Mabs were not returned.”

Hmmm.

An interactive map showing the numbers of Irish citizens travelling from the UK to avail of abortion services in 2012 broken down into geographic regions.

Figures published last week by the UK Department of Health show a total of 3,982 women with Irish addresses accessed abortion services in the UK.

By Phil Lang who writes:

There were 889 women who didn’t specify what region they came from, so this number is not represented in this visualisation. However, I still think that it makes for an interesting exploration.

Minister for Finance Michael Noonan has described as “attractive” a proposal that would give Ireland’s multimillionaire tax exiles an extra two months a year in the State in exchange for a €15 million payment over 10 years.

A proposal from the Government-backed Forum on Philanthropy has suggested a scheme where so-called high net worth individuals who have chosen to live abroad can “buy” extra days in Ireland in exchange for investment in charities and other worthy projects.
