The Penny Drops

Journalists Gavin Sheridan and  Peter Geoghegan discover the secret of the US election.

Bewildered Student writes:

Irish media people realise Irish media coverage of US Elections has been as biased as US coverage….Hate that.

Earlier: Leaking Support

Intelligence expert Steve Piecznik outlines the ‘silent coup’ and ‘counter coup’ he claims is underway in America and how the ‘Lolita Express’ may derail Hillary Clinton’s bid for the White House.

Irish people consider CNN as their RTE and Fox News as something mental on the fringes.

Fox News has the same viewership as all the other major news stations combined.

    1. Tony

Thats just not true. ABC and NBC news have multiples of Fox’s numbers. It rarely gets more than 2m viewers.

  2. Vote Rep #1

Bodger wetting himself at the way this election is going.

Trump will probably get in and it is quite terrifying. When the Chinese tell you your environment plans are awful, you should really stop and think. But he is no Killary so all is good. Right?

    1. PaddyM

Not so much Breitbart as Counterpunch – the sort of purist leftwingers who are so determined that the middle-ground consensus is wrong that they end up becoming useful idiots for the far right and its sponsors like Putin.

I don’t much like Clinton but I’ll take her ahead of Trump in a heartbeat. She’s rational. She doesn’t attract Nazis like flies to cowshit:

      1. PaddyM

“On May 3, 2011, radio host Alex Jones aired an interview in which Pieczenik claimed that Osama bin Laden had died of Marfan syndrome in 2001 shortly after the September 11 attacks, and that the attacks on the United States on 9/11 were part of a false flag operation by entities within the American government, the Israeli leadership and Mossad.[31]

On October 20, 2011 in an interview with Alex Jones, Pieczenik claimed that Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi was alive, and said, “There’s no way they killed Muammar Gaddafi, that’s not our operating mode and I’ve been involved in 30 years with the takeouts and regime changes.” He also criticised President Barack Obama, calling him an “obsessional pathological liar”.[32][33]

On September 16, 2012, during an interview with Alex Jones, Pieczenik stated that Israel planned to initiate war with Iran during Yom Kippur 2012 unless ex-Mossad and ex-Shin Bet agents assassinated Benjamin Netanyahu.[34]

On March 27, 2013, Pieczenik claimed that the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting was a hoax and a false flag event.[35]

On 9 May 2013, Pieczenik claimed that the 2012 Benghazi attack was the result of a turf war between the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the military intelligence. He suggested that the CIA wished to get rid of General David Petraeus, and wanted to get John O. Brennan, through his illegal SOCOM unit, to arm Syria.[36]”

So we’re now getting treated to videos from a conspiracy nut who thinks that the JewsIsraelis were responsible for 9/11, presented as impartial comment. Sheridan and Geoghegan are doing factual if anecdotal reporting that there’s widespread support for Trump, fair enough (I remember Geoghegan doing interesting stuff from Sunderland in the run-up to the Brexit referendum) but there’s a big difference between that and turning Broadsheet into a conduit for this sort of poisonous shite.

I give it six months before Bodger starts posting Holocaust “revisionist” stuff on Broadsheet. Less than that, if Trump actually gets elected and the alt-right think they have free rein to indulge themselves.

        1. Starina

on a side note, did you see Laurie Penny dressed as Alex Jones for Halloween? she made herself a tinfoil hat. squee!

        2. :-Joe

          Hahahaaaaa………… aaahhh!?!?

I thought this was a new episode of Black Mirror or some mad basterdised new internet version of Timecode or “24” for the uninitiated.

Bewildered Student makes a great comment… and although the dude with the lack of central intelligence means well and so much of what he’s talking about is actually rooted in reality….

It’s all a big circus show distraction to get people fired up and clicking away faster and faster getting more and more frenzied and angrier in their safe little virtual echo chambers just talking to copies of themselves like good little drones submitting to a pre-programmed collective consciousness…

Anger make more click now… more click make more ad views…. more ad view make more dollars…
more dollars make more control…. more control make more greed… more greed make more manipulation… more manipulation make more anger….. more anger make more click now….

I’ve said it before and just like the only 21st century role model left that you can believe in says

          ………AN’ I’LL KEEP ON FUN.KING SAYIN’ IT !!!……

    1. Gorev Mahagut

Journalists are writers, they look for interesting stories. 538 is all statistics and numbers.

Journalists want to create a sense of suspense in order to sell their stories. Statisticians are comfortable with being boring.

Narrative is good for explaining what just happened. Probability is a mathematical thing.

    1. well

Probably a good idea. The last time America was “Great” was post WW2 when they had all the standing factories and Europe/Asia where in ruins.

  3. Jake38

The implied Irish media consensus (IT, Radio SIPTU, etc) that we are all innate Democrats here always amuses me.

  4. Martina

This is laughable!! Two Irish blokes spend a few days in two states and are prognosticating on the election??! LOL! Ohio has been very close for a while and Philly will give Hillary the win in PA.

    1. Dόn Pídgéόní

Tbf, talking to some heads in a bar is the same as multiple polls that have been indicating how close is for weeks. Nothing new here.

      1. Martina

Multiple polls have not indicated it was close for weeks. She opened up a big lead which tightened a little last week before FBI letter…now it’s likely to tighten again. State polls in swing states and in Utah should be watched not national polls.

          1. Dόn Pídgéόní

Ignore the polls of you want, but I don’t know why you would unless you were an idiot. And that’s state polls.

  5. Boy M5

After Brexit, I’m not making the same mistake again. I’m staying up all night until the result is in.

  6. Junkface

If Trump wins, Russia would immediately start military operations for land grabs along their border.

  7. Sullery

Trump has a good shot at winning, Hillary has a better one. That’s been the broad trend for months and I’m not sure where anyone would get any other ideas.

  8. Boy M5

Mate of mine who hates everyone (well, those who deserve it) is quite happy to see Trump win and end the world.

  9. ahjayzis

I mean forget the electoral college system, the fact the democrats have more college votes as a baseline than the republicans, the fact it comes down to swing states Hillary is killing in, two Paddy’s on a US jaunt have had a few chats with what I’m sure is a representative sample of the 200+ million electorate – we’re all doomed! Hope they asked them what they think of Ireland and if they’ve any Irish in them.

  10. De Kloot

Jesus H Christ, the amount of fupping woo Bodger is…. well, it looks like we’re going full Glen Beck circa 2008….

  11. Eoin

Polls are muck. Reuters oversampling stated Democrats and still can’t get a decent lead for Hillary. Just check the view count on the candidates uploaded key speeches on youtube if you want actual raw data. Trump has well over 20 times Hillarys view count. Game over. He’ll win the popular vote. And if he wins the popular vote and Hillary still ends up in the Whitehouse, there will be a revolution.

    1. Dόn Pídgéόní

YouTube views aren’t indicative of support – they could be horror watches for either candidate. That is why we have polls and try to adjust for sampling.

        1. Dόn Pídgéόní

I’d take voting, with all its flaws including people who can’t be bothered, over using social media thanks.

  12. Termagant

I’m not sure how Trump will do for America, his tax plan needs some work, he’ll have a lot of graft to put in to undo the damage the heavily biased media slant that’s persisted throughout the campaign and which will have him facing animosity from the rainbow battalion. Smiting globalist world trade deals that will ship even more labour overseas is a good move, as is securing the southern border.

But here’s the nub and crux of the matter: I don’t live in the US. I live in the rest of the world, and so, presumably, do the vast majority of you.

Hillary’s reckless, meddling foreign policy doctrine is not good for the rest of the world. She’s going to keep backing the Saudi’s horses in Syria and she’s going to keep antagonising the Ruskies. That’s not a path to peace and prosperity for any of us.

    1. MepMep

Hillary antagonises the Russians, Trump bends over for them. Living in Europe, I’d rather see Clinton stick NATO in their face rather than see Trump shrug at land grabs from Putin.

    1. Bonkers

same here but at 5/1 and then cashed out at a loss when the sexual assault story broke. Its all looking a bit different now

  13. Spagnolia von Hoop

Two party race. With history and allegiance leading, with no reason nor choice left at this late stage. It’s a massive nation but not an exemplary one; hence I think Trump will win.

  14. EightersGonnaEight

Sheridan and Co need to get out more. The mass media are reporting how close things are:

“Washington Post-ABC News tracking poll released on Tuesday showed Mr Trump with a one-point lead over Mrs Clinton nationally, marking the first time that the Republican has held a lead in that poll since May. In the RealClearPolitics average of recent polls, Mrs Clinton now leads Mr Trump by just 2.2 points — down from a 7 point lead just two weeks ago.”

  15. GOS

This is an absurd post from Broadsheet. Anecdotal evidence versus an avalanche of other evidence. It really is very Trumpian – remember a core critique of his is that the pollsters are fixing their results against him.

It may be close, but early voting in no way suggests a silent majority out to elect Trump.

And indeed most Irish people are very much pro Clinton and pro Democrat. A recent poll (IT/MRBI I think) put it at something like 80/20 in her favour. Look at the number of time RTE has published single polls which are bad for Clinton and the idea of propaganda coverage is shown to be drivel.

If BS keeps up this Trumpian/Wikileaks nonsense it really will go to hell

    1. Bodger

GOS, The support for Donald Trump has been underestimated. .His rallies have regularly attracted 25-40,000 people wherever he goes. In contrast Hillary Clinton is unable to fill gyms. This has been going on for some time.

Like Brexit and the last General Election the press is not reflecting what is actually happening on the ground.I would strongly recommend you to read the Wikileaks emails and you will see why this is so.

The reason we posted the items from the Irish journalists was because of their surprise. Presumably they have been getting their election news from what you might call reputable sources.

      1. Dόn Pídgéόní

Rallies aren’t votes. If anything, they are die-hard supporters who wouldn’t be swayed either way when offer are the voters of interest in this election.

Wikileaks are a joke and your one man campaign to support him makes broadsheet a joke.

        1. Sibling of Daedalus

Not necessarily. The point being made is not high attendance at Trump rallies but poor attendance at Hillary rallies. What does it say for a politician like Hillary if she can’t even muster die-hard supporters?

Comments like ‘wikileaks is a joke’ would be more convincing if you set out the reasons for this view…

          1. Dόn Pídgéόní

And? US voting of a very different kettle of fish as we know. Yes, she should be doing better but i don’t take rallies as the be all of support. There are a lot of reasons people do and don’t go. A life time democrat probably isn’t likely to go to a rally but someone previously disenfranchised from voting is going to be excited and go. That’s who goes to trump rallies – new voters and hard core right wing republicans.

Wikileaks, saviour of the free world by releasing details of LGBT people and victims of sexual assault in the middle East? That’s the joke, an organisation run by a narcicist playing to a two horse race by backing another narcicist. If bodger had posted anything about other candidates you might see his point. But there isn’t which only leads you to conclude support for trump, a man who sexually assaults women. Like Assange. Haha! Jokes on us for putting up with this nonsense I guess.

          2. Termagant

I just think it’s a tragedy that Wikileaks were held with such high regard when they were divulging the dark secrets of the Bush administration only to be vilified for doing the same to Hillary. The unbounded hypocrisy of the regressive left, it’s sad, you know? Makes me cry actual tears of real emotion.

          3. Dόn Pídgéόní

Only people who had a che poster on their wall and wear a keffiyeh think any of it was a good idea.

          4. Termagant

I disagree, there’s no greater pleasure in life than to see a power-bloated scumbag reminded that their hide is not invulnerable

          5. Termagant

It was worth it for its own sake. All a pint achieves is a piss but it’s still worthwhile.

Besides, it may have upset the applecart this time around.

          6. Mr Reality

Wow what planet are you on Don, they are neck and neck with sky news firmly reporting on trump ahead of Hillary, the msm have turned on her she is finished

      2. GOS

Sorry, but your posting of a fake story followed by the addition of videos from a conspiracy theorist known to have promoted wild and unfounded allegations in the past brings your motivation and judgement into question.

It appears you and Sean Hannity share an eagerness to promote anti-Clinton fack stories:

BS needs to address this slide into the fringes where the bulk of ‘revelations’ are wild and the reasonable principle of respecting a person’s right to due process is viewed as an elite conspiracy.

And BTW, the said journalists gave no details of any effort they made to ensure that they covered a balanced section of said states.

        1. DubLoony

But look at the amount of replies it generates. That’s how TV helped Trump. He was good for ratings and gave a new story everyday. The media only now realising that they can’t control the monster.

      3. DubLoony

All Trump has are the big rallies, TV coverage on Fox and Twitter. And boy does he know how to use them. He is at war with the republican party as much as with media, Hilary, and Miss Universe.

Hilary has data analysts mapping every demographic, TV ads, radio ads, people going door to door, endorsements from current and former president, first lady and millions of donations still coming in and a united democratic party behind her.

  16. P

Re. the Michelle Obama twitter account.
Does Broadsheet even check the sh$t they post these days. What utter nonsense.
Stick to posting the frontpages (and then telling us how newspapers are dead).

      1. The Lady Vanishes

Claims that the death of newspapers have been greatly exaggerated might be more convincing if those making it weren’t doing so on non-traditional news websites….

        1. DubLoony

The format that is breaking most factual news are print papers – Trumps billion dollar tax write off, the extraordinary story of how he cultivated the persona of philanthropist without actually donating any money.

  17. Kieran NYC

So do we take this ‘investigation’ into Hillary as seriously as the George Gibney post or as a LJG post?

It would be nice to know what to take seriously and when they just troll for the fights and clicks.

    In fairness.

          1. Nigel

I’m happy to be anti-hoax. You’re a pro-hoax shill? I mean, everybody knows, it’s just the moment of honesty is refreshing.

          2. Mr Reality

Your a shill run off anywhere you like you are a shill for king of the fugees Soros and his stooge Hillary Clinton, both convicts, Nigel the hired shill

          3. Mr Reality

You acceptance is irrelevant, he has been convicted twice for fraud and insider trading, he’s a black market scumbag and thats on record, your inability to accept merely shows how much of a shill you are, the hoax dialogue is a pathetic ploy by you to try and muddy the water, pathetic being the operating term

          4. Nigel

I think you want me to care, one way or the other, which would almost be touching if you weren’t so childish. Just imagine how much you’d achieve if you didn’t go off the rails whenever someone says ‘boo’ to you.

          5. Mr Reality

You do care thats why your back checking the post and replying, I’m not hysterical but you are certainly desperate you invent a fake narrative around hoaxes in a pathetic attempt to get a pejorative to stick because you have been exposed as a paid for shill, your trying to drag the whole thing off topic, you than use pseudo tactics to try label me a hysterical child all unsupported as per usual, the facts are you defend and support convicted racketeering scumbags and warlords, you have no reply to that allegation

          6. Nigel

I check back because you’re being a fun distraction for me. If I was defending Clinton or Soros you would be able to directly address things I have said in their defence. Instead you flail around with repetitive accusations, presumably in the hope of distracting from your tendency to promote pro-Trump hoax nonsense instead of reasonable criticism of, say, Clinton’s policies. You are hysterical. Nobody screams PAID SHILL CONVICT WARLORD NAZI or whatever without being hysterical. You’re a shrill shill but you want validation and some kind of acknowledged legitimacy, if only someone would engage you on your own hysterical bad-faith trollish terms. That’s why you keep checking back. It must really hurt on some level that you will only ever be taken vaguely seriously as yet another disruptive loudmouth Shouty McShouterface, of which there is no shortage.

  18. SomeChump

The story about Michelle Obama and Elizabeth Warren unfollowing Hillary is a hoax. Please stop aggressively attacking the only person standing in the way of a white supremacist fascist being president of the US. A man who is endorsed by the KKK. A man who asked 3 times in 20 mins “If we have nuclear weapons which can’t we just use ’em?”. A man who is in favour of increasing the amount of nuclear weapons in the world and supports Saudi Arabia having them. His campaign was willing to accept an illegal donation from a Chinese businessman in exchange for influence. Everything he does is motivated by his own ego and self-interest. It is absurd to think he would be the less corrupt choice.

    1. Termagant

Why do you think Donald is a fascist, my friend? Why do you think he’s a white supremacist?

Why do you think the candidate who took massive campaign donations from the Saudis is less likely to lobby for their nuclear armament?

  19. The Lady Vanishes

    Fascist? Narcissist? Hawkish? Corrupt?

Really, quite a lot of the above pejoratives could apply equally to Clinton.

Much as I would like to support a candidate who isn’t Trump, a woman candidate, a liberal candidate, when I listen to Hillary’s voice, I feel viscerally repulsed. There is something very unpleasant about her.

    1. MepMep

True. Sadly Hillary can’t measure up on the sexist, racist, disability-mimicking and tax-avoision fronts.

  20. Wittgenstein

Fair play Bodger, at least you are highlighting what is unmentionable alsewhere in the Irish media. The Podesta emails, supplied by Wikileaks, are astounding and, in time, people will realise their importance. Keep up the fight!

    1. DubLoony

The Podesta mails do shine a light into the murky world where Clinton Foundation meets influence for cash donations and personal payments to Bill & Hilary.

In many respects it confirms the insider, wall street loving type that they are. But if I had the option to vote for them over that orange fascist.

  21. Mr Reality

All the cretins complaining about the anti Hillary stance and then show up daily commenting on all other posts, like buying a Ryanair seat everytime you fly and than moaning about it..

        1. Nigel

You’re doing heroic efforts for the recklessly stupid side of the equation, a grateful world salutes you.

          1. Mr Reality

In your biased shill opinion, the one that supports warlords and war criminals, you have zero credibility

          2. Mr Reality

I’m not the one pining for the convicts Nigel you are you shill, go and defend/shill for your convicted warlords but be aware your defence can go only so far before you look like a paid for sock puppet, that point passed ages ago btw shill

          3. Mr Reality

And you mentioned hoaxes not me I don’t care for hoaxes so stay on tangent and keep your ploys/pejoratives to yourself you shill

          4. Nigel

You mention hoaxes all the time. Most of the stuff you mention are hoaxes. You claim to think anyone who points out a hoax is a shill for Hilary. You don’t actually think that, it’s just the only way you know how to operate.

          5. Mr Reality

Your unsupported nonsense is both false and incidental, the facts are that you support and defend a convicted criminal and a flakey illegal candidate currently under criminal investigation, your a shill and your pandering about hoaxes only shows how desperate for an exit plan you are.

          6. Nigel

You hide behind pro-Trump hoaxes and then accuse people who point out your hoaxes of being shills. You get quite hysterical about it. Incredibly hysterical. Like a wee little Trump-thing having a tantrum.

          7. Mr Reality

You invent narratives as a ploy to deflect from the fact that you have been exposed as a paid for sock puppet

  22. rotide

    This is great.

You take a break from the endless drivel of BS for a few weeks and this is the first thing you see on your return.

They’re doing a half price sale on tin foil down in Aldi bodger, get on it

  23. petey

    *reads article*
“i saw some lawn signs and trump will win.”
    ah right then.
can only speak for my locality, and Clinton is up 20+% in NYS, trump’s home state mind. we know him better.
he could win, which would be deplorable.
