Your commute to work being disrupted for the 5 seconds it takes you walk around the van on the footpath is not worth them having to drag a violent prisoner 100 yards down the street because the Guards had to park around the corner. You have no idea why they are there, who is desperately waiting on them to arrive or what the outcome might be.

Think outside your own little precious bubble before you take the time to stop, get the phone out and take a picture and have a pop at the Guards online – something that no doubt took an age longer than the amount of time you would be inconvenienced by going around the footpath.

Go twinkle yourself Daniel. I’m a cyclist I think this guy is a winkie. Like every other road users, if you encounter an obstruction check that its safe to go around, and if not then wait until it is safe.

I cycled past that spot every morning for about 10 years. There was regularly a garda vehicle in the cycle lane (albeit a temporary one). It always seemed to be parked near to the Centra at breakfast time. Sure that’s a coincidence though, could be that there was a violent prisoner in the area every morning at the same time that they had to drag to that spot.

Even with no prisoner, even if god forbid the guards require a meal to sustain themselves each day like mere mortals such as yourself and nip into a shop to buy it, an emergency call can come in at any moment. If you were in an emergency would you prefer the guards had their van parked outside in the bus lane or 5 minutes down the road in the nearest parking space?

Not only is it entirely legal for them to park there being exempt from Road Traffic laws and bye-laws but it is also policy to park in close proximity at all times for the reasons outlined above. Any argument against that practice is pure and utter begrudgery regardless if they are attending a call or heaven forbid, eating breakfast.

We all require meals & breakfast rolls to sustain ourselves… we don’t all park up in the cycle lane though or if we do we get clamped.

Anne – try reading beyond the first sentence of my post. I already answered your question.

Just because they’re exempt doesn’t give them the right to park like twits.
Having said that, taking a photo of it and posting it on Broadsheet seems like an enormous waste of time.

Taking the time to comment on said story is probably going to win you a Nobel Prize on the other hand.

Probably you are one of those guardas that park anywhere in order to get a lovely sausage roll and a cup of tea, not thinking about others and putting others at risk . Im surprised its only 1 guarda car and 1 truck parked in this cycle lane, normaly its the full length of the cycle lane with cars .

“Not only is it entirely legal for them to park there being exempt from Road Traffic laws and bye-laws”

          They’re not exempt.

        5. Con Kennedy

Gardaí are not exempt from traffic laws. They have to follow the same rules as ordinary citizens

    2. Paps

They could park closer to / half way on the curb.
Also, AGS park on westland row to pop into shops for coffee quite often

    3. Paddy at the Howth Summit

Ians right to call this out. The cops were more likely in SPAR in pursuit of breakfast rolls than anything else. They’re not above the law.

  2. Topsy

@ Ian Tighe. Perhaps the Gardai were busy investigating a crime (possibly a robbery, theft or even rape) in a building adjacent to where the van was parked.
But hey I do hope they keep an eye on you in the future to ensure you stop behaving like a prat.
    Be afraid, be very afraid.

Cycled past this scene on the way to work this morning and spotted the Garda in question leaving the Centra. Could have been attending due to an incident in the shop, could have been grabbing his breakfast. Who cares? I don’t begrudge him pulling in for either reason.

BS, stop giving the snowflakes who have little gripes any coverage this year….keep us all sane!

I remember the first time I heard the word millennial.. I cringed pretty hard.

    Snowflake makes me miss millennial.

    1. Topsy

With regard to parking, if they deem it necessary they may park where ever; and in fact are above the law.

  6. some old queen

Loathe as I am to agree with the drunk / on drugs cyclist militia; this is clearly a case of social position being abused.

    Judge SOQ.

    1. Brother Barnabas

their parking isn’t the only abuse

can see them every morning in every spar across the city getting their breakfast rolls

here’s an idea… have your breakfast in your own time before you go to fupping work like the rest of us

      1. some old queen

On behalf on the gays I object to your reference to lesbian members of An Garda Síochána as being fat. It’s accurate but I am obliged.
