Nearly knocked down today by someone making an illegal turn who told me that people do it all the time so I should relax. So no.

      1. Andrew

ah yeah. Dial it down a bit. I cycle in to work every day and there are a lot of precious twits on bikes these days. half think their on the tour de France and the other half are looking to be outraged. Most hypocritical on obeying basic road rules, like traffic lights.

        1. ReproBertie

That’s gas. I don’t cycle to work every day but I do cycle quite regularly and I have yet to encounter someone who thought they were competing in the Tour de France or someone looking to be outraged.

          We must take different routes.

          1. Dr_Chimp

You must be cycling with your eyes closed. Next time you’re out, observe the number of cyclists dressed head to toe in “yellow jerseys” for their mont ventoux cycle from Stephens green to Rathmines.

I’m not sure the other half are out looking to be outraged but they are very very easily annoyed. One thing they don’t get is that other road users making left turns do not have to wait an indefinite amount of time so that every conceivable cyclist can pass on the inside. This really annoys them.

Very few people wear cycling gear in the city centre. Almost everyone is in normal clothes. How do you know how far they are cycling anyway?

          3. Clampers Outside!

^clearly damn it, I typed “clearly” damn you!
Damn you all to hell in a cycle-basket!

          4. ReproBertie

Dr Chimp, do you think people who wore an Ireland jersey to the match last night were expecting to be subbed on?

          5. Dr_Chimp

That’s just not true. Many people wear the full kit…head up to the grand canal at 8am/5pm and watch them go by. And I don’t know how far they are cycling as that was a joke to make a point. However, the average commute time in Co. Dublin is between 28 and 33 mins (roughly) so I’m guessing they’re not going too far.

@ReproBertie if I saw someone wearing the full kit, socks, shorts, boots and all I 100% would say “That fella thinks he’s playing this evening”.

          6. Clampers Outside!

In my last job, two lads wore the cycling gear… both cycling 10km every morning and evening hail rain or shine. I admired their resilience in fairness.

they are rare enough though :)

          7. Rep

The fury people have for others who wear cycling gear is funny. Nobody bats an eyelid at joggers wearing proper running kit yet the idea that somebody dares wears clothes made for make cycling more comfortable is something to be sneered at.

          8. papa p

And whats more soccer fans wearing soccer jerseys without so much kicking a ball.
            Dr_chimp live and let live.

        2. Dr_Chimp

100% papa p, live and let live, wear whatever you want where you want. We can still comment on it though.

There’s certainly no fury. But again, if you’re wearing a singlet, short shorts and running spikes while walking Fido in the park you might get a few looks.

    2. Scundered

Are you even aware of what the nazis done? And you think they are even remotely comparable to cyclists?

  1. Rep

TIL that you are not allowed complain about road safety if other people who use the same mode of transport as you engage in unsafe practices. Good to know. I guess nobody can every complain about anything again.

    Idiot.

  2. ReproBertie

If just one cyclist breaks a rule of the road then all cyclists’ complaints are null and void.

    1. Dr.Fart MD

i know what you mean.. but it really isn’t one cyclist is it? literally walk any stretch of road in the city and see any number of cyclists breaking road laws. it’s harder to take cyclsits pleas when you see them constantly pay no heed to laws themselves.

      1. ReproBertie

How many cyclists need to break a rule of the road to nullify the opinions of all other cyclists?

Does the same rule apply to all other road users? I saw people crossing at a red pedestrian light this morning. Does that mean we can ignore all pedestrian complaints? Now that I think of it, I saw a couple of cars run a red light too so that’s that for their problems, right?

      2. Rep

The same reasoning applies to pedestrians and motorist. Why should anyone heed your regular complaints about cyclists when others engage in similarly unsafe actions and seem to pay no heed to laws themselves?

      3. LeopoldGloom

I can easily edit that to say :

literally walk any stretch of road in the city and see any number of Drivers breaking road laws.

Amber gambling is endemic now amongst drivers. Red lights are optional for the first 3-5 cars it seems. Bus lane driving is regular. Speeding is a big problem that I’d wager most drivers sometimes do.

However, the biggest problem on roads is Drivers using their phones. I witness dozens, every morning staring at their phones while driving. It’s a serious issue. It’s not acceptable. I saw one driver checking his phone, while driving in the bus lane past the scene of last friday’s fatal accident in Drumcondra. Thankfully the Gardaí spotted him too.

There are degrees of safety and responsibility. So long as there are drivers complaining about RLJing, and slow cyclists holding htem up and other mosetly nonsense argument, expect to see stuff like this.

          1. axelf

I’m seeing a lot of cyclists looking at their phones while cycling now. youd never know that theyre vulnerable road users.

        1. LeopoldGloom

Yup. There are certainly a large number of cyclists who don’t have much consideration for those around them, but he disdain shown towards the whole group of cyclists is disproportionate when in reality the serious road issues are being caused by cars/drivers.

I had a pedestrian with 3 kids step out in front of me today from behind an SUV. They looked and saw me and kept going. They didn’t consider I was traffic. If I were in a car, they would have waited or been injured.
They decided it would be simpler to give out to me for not taking care. This is a grown adult who should know to look right, left then right again before crossing. They glanced, assumed I would stop and kept going. They caused the danger, not me, yet I was the problem for their carelessness.

I was going plenty slow enough to be able to stop anyway.

      4. Rob_G

“walk any [city in the world] and see any number of [black people] breaking [laws]. It’s harder to take [black people’s pleas for equal treatment] when you see them constantly pay no heed to laws themselves”.

        1. Dr.Fart MD

there we go. the best comment ive seen in the toilet that is broadsheet comments section. cyclists being equated to black people. brilliant. let my people goooooo!

i think what’s needed is actual traffic corps. actually policing traffic. its a free for all out there, and ya never seen traffic corps around.

          1. Bodger

‘the toilet that is broadsheet comments section’?

The nerve. I bet you’re not even a real doctor.

          2. LeopoldGloom

Dedicated traffic/transport police would be good, but Red Light Cameras and a small civil staff to issue fines/penalties would free up a load of police resources and help sort out some of the most blatant traffic offenses. It would pay for itself in short time too.

          3. Andyourpointiswhatexactly?

Hey Bodge, ole chap. My new avatar doesn’t adequately reflect my personality. I preferred the horny alien.

          4. Rob_G

Not equating black people to cyclists, merely showing you how generaliastions and blaming the many for the sins of the few is not especially helpful contribution to a debate.

          5. Jeffrey

Actually think this is the main cause of all the troubles regarding traffic in towns yes. People without the view or chance of ever be stopped get into seriously bad habits, like someone mentioned the mobile phones or the optional red light for 2-3 cars…another optional is the indicators for roundabouts or even not knowing that some roundabout have 2 lanes.

          6. Curated by Vanessa for Frilly Keane

No, Millie. Us Millennials prefer people to do stuff for us. It’s our way.

        2. Dr_Chimp

Equating black people’s “struggle” for equal treatment to the plight of cyclists in Dublin. Is there any group not struggling to fight the oppression? Plus, if I go to Detroit or Chicago your statement may actually be correct

    2. Rob_G

It never ceases to amaze me, when someone has a Twitter account that is very much linked to their work, but then they occasionally post dumb personal observations likely to alienate a large portion of their clientele…

      1. Brother Barnabas

personally i wouldn’t have gone any further than “Manchester United Supporter”

      2. Spaghetti Hoop

Do you remember when people linked their Twitter accounts to their LinkedIn profile? Now THAT was funny, especially when at a gig or something.

  3. millie st murderlark

I don’t have the energy for the weekly war of cyclists v motorists.

Wake me when the bloodshed is over.

    1. Scundered

The cyclists all get killed by the car drivers, then as the drivers rejoice they all choke to death on their own fumes .

      The end.

  4. postmanpat

As a Dublin cyclist I have to point out that @Dublincycling do not speak for me. Its just a parked bus FFS . just cycle around. I brake every other red when there’s nothing coming from any direction and its completely safe to do so, just like pedestrians on foot do, it illegal sure, but come on? Just wait there for no reason? . So a paddywagon ‘pride of Ireland’ in my path isn’t going to have me up in arms. Stupid tweets about Corporate manslaughter? (seriously.. cop the f on!) is only going to draw negative attention to completely safe, rule bending cyclists that have been running lights completely safely for years. I’ve noticed a huge increase of righteous indignation from cyclists this year, I blame the social media internet , it has turned everyone into a bunch of pansy cry babies. Talk about white people problems! Yesterday some fat blonde on a bike overtook me and rang her pathetic little bell by the canal in a sad passive aggressive way, just because I overtook her while she was stopped at a red pedestrian lights like a sap a while earlier near Harold cross and was upset that I was making better time or something. Paddywagon can continue to do what they are doing and ill continue to do what I do. so were even. simple. Cyclist get killed by lorry blind spots when turning left and motorists on mobile phones , not by cars parked on cycling lanes. @Dublincycling needs to grow up.

    1. LeopoldGloom

It’s a clearway for a reason. If you need to turn left onto Talbot street, it becomes a PITA for cars when there’s a bus stopped here for more than a few moments as would happen at the bus stop. It also blocks busses from pulling out safely at the Dublin Bus stop.

It drastically can slow down the flow of traffic, and improving traffic flow is a huge issue in dublin.

Gardiner street is not great for cycling on either at the best of times, so this creates an unnessary pinch point.

      1. Clampers Outside!

While I hear that reasoningfor an issue with the PW Bus, those aren’t the whining in the complaint by Dublincycling.

I think Dublincycling should focus more on promoting better cycling and avoiding obstacles safely, s there will always be obstacles, road works, etc.

And that an arm out stretched to turn without looking behind before turning is only for those with a death wish… a thing I used to see almost daily when I commuted by bike in Dublin.

    2. Boules

+ 5 times around Ireland helping cyclists!!
Paddywagon are an amazingly generous company who have greatly helped the charity Cycle Against Suicide by donating a large coach and driver for the last 4-5 years. They follow the cyclists all around Ireland for 10 days (was previously 2 weeks) and pick up any cyclists who are tired or need to stop for whatever reason.
Extremely unfortunate that they were singled out in this photograph considering the incredible work they do to aid this cycle event. FYI Cycle Against Suicide is a charity almost entirely run by volunteers to promote positive mental health and reduce suicide rates, worth checking out.

  5. James M.Chimney

Can we stop all this cyclist V’s motorist guff and focus on driving the people with electric scooters into the sea? Granted they’ll have to carry the infernal contraptions for the last few metres or so. That’s why I have my pitchfork.

    1. LeopoldGloom

They’re annoying, but partly because they’re novel. If it frees up road space , reduces traffic and quickens and betters public transport I’m all for it.

Dublin is pretty small. It’s quite easy for an able bodied person to get from one side to the other without have to resort to a car, but so many single person car journeys are happening that are less than 5km. It’s pointless and such an awful waste of time and space.

      1. postmanpat

Fat people tend not to cycle or walk (except to the fridge to eat their feeling). It is the Fat motorists that walk like toddlers because of their body shape are the most vocal about naughty cyclists. Their reaction time is slower than normal people because of the gluten buildup and they get nervous in situations where normal people, pedestrians and motorists tend not to care. Its like that cycling program a few weeks back on RTE with the Fat guy from Bachelors Walk was talking to some literal nobody culche family who once went on holiday someplace in Europe where people cycled more (so they where some kind of expert now.) The show kept cutting to low to the ground go-pro footage of a bike weaving in and out of light Dublin traffic (making cycling seem more dangerous than it actually is). Then an interview with a hairy red leprechaun courier who told porkies about nearly being pushed into the canal. Any Fat people watching the show would think that cyclist are crazy to even get on a bike, which feeds back into their decision not to get active and continue to drive to work (and to the takeaway on the way home)

        1. rotide

” Their reaction time is slower than normal people because of the gluten buildup ”

          SCIENCE

        2. Dub Spot

Could be an opportunity there – Fattened Up Fixies (also known as Segways).

Programme would have been more interesting if yer man was cycling an OG Raleigh Chopper in an out of the traffic with an Arsenal bag slung over his shoulder. Nah, RTE originality ain’t the best, is it?

  6. Spaghetti Hoop

JUDGE: So, Mr. Wagon, how do you plead to these charges brought against you by Dublin Cycling of potential corporate manslaughter?
PADDY: What de HELL is dat?

Heh. I now crowbar that phrase into any conversation I can, chuckling away at myself.
