Amateur astronomer Andrew McCarthy’s stunningly detailed image of the first quarter moon of 2020 – 100,000 images composited into one. To wit:

The natural colours (sez he) of the moon were brought out here with minor saturation adjustments, but those colours are completely real and what you could see if your eyes were more sensitive. I find the colour really helps tell the story of how some of these features formed billions of years ago.

McCarthy sells his images as wallpaper and hi res prints here.

Behold: the 1991 Vector W8 – one of two prototypes and 17 customer cars built by VAC – a Californian auto maker that lasted just four years before folding. Created by veteran auto designer Gerald Wiegert using elements from the aircraft industry including an aerodynamic riveted frame and fighter jet instruments.

Powered by a  625bhp, 6.0l twin turbo V8, the Vector accelerates to 100km/h in less than three seconds and on to a (theoretical) top speed of 390km/h.

Fully documented with just under 2,500km on the clock, it’s yours for around €400,000.

Another gorgeous shot of the ‘Mother of Pearl’ or nacreous cloud formations which occurred late last year over Sweden, in this case, on New Year’s Eve in the skies above Ostersund. To wit:

A relatively rare phenomenon in clouds known as iridescence can bring up unusual colours vividly or even a whole spectrum of colours simultaneously. These polar stratospheric clouds clouds (…) are formed of small water droplets of nearly uniform size. When the Sun is in the right position and, typically, hidden from direct view, these thin clouds can be seen significantly diffracting sunlight in a nearly coherent manner, with different colors being deflected by different amounts. Therefore, different colours will come to the observer from slightly different directions. Many clouds start with uniform regions that could show iridescence but quickly become too thick, too mixed, or too angularly far from the Sun to exhibit striking colours.
