To honour its hosting of Morrissey’s seven-night residency on Broadway, the Lunt-Fontanne theatre in Manhattan re-named some of the drinks in its bar after the great man’s songs…
Bray, County Wicklow rapper Leigh Michael has teamed up with producer Chap Stallion for a forthcoming album ‘Secret Herbs Vol. 2’.
The lead single ‘E-14’ (above), which ‘dropped’ this week, features Leigh laying down some seriously impressive rhyming wordsmithery over a bouncy upbeat instrumental:
“Anxiety rise intertwined with your dial-up speed/ It’s why I find night sky is a diamond feed.”
Are A Lazarus Soul too real for ya? If not, then you will rejoice at the news that the Dublin indie outcasts are launching their new album ‘The D They Put Between The R & L’ in The Grand Social tomorrow night.
Last week, Brian Brannigan and his crew ‘dropped’ the lead single ‘No Hope Road’ (above) – in which they sing about escaping the drudgery of modern Irish life by spliffing out to classic Jamaican reggae.
It’s another coruscating state-of-the-nation address from Brannigan, who has fire in his belly and the bit between his teeth. Fans of Joy Division, Billy Bragg and Damien Dempsey take note.
Students of Dublin in the rare oul’ times will also not want to miss the video to ‘We Know Where You Live’, which features wonderful home video footage of the community of Deanstown, north Dublin, in 1972.
Support on the night comes from David Long, former lead singer of cult 1980s indie desperados Into Paradise.
Dubliner Dave releases his new solo album ‘In Headphones’ later this year (catch its first single Pill Box here) and you can read a quite wonderful appreciation of the man and his work by former Into Paradise press officer and ‘No Disco’ TV producer Colm O’Callaghan on his ‘The Blackpool Sentinel’ blog.
Nick says:If you’re searching for the pure soul of Irish rock, look no further.
If you’re a lover of Americana, the only place to be is at the Kilkenny Roots Festival.
Now in its 22nd year, this fiesta of alt.folk, alt.country and alt.genres in between sees dozens of The Marble City’s bars and venues given over to top-quality live music.
This year’s headliners include The Delines (Portland,Oregon-based country-soul par excellence); The Sadies (Canadian roots-rock veterans); Alejandro Escvodeo (deeply soulful hombre from Texas); and Patty Griffin (Grammy-winning singer/songwriter from Maine).
Psychedelic Pill – a kick-ass Neil Young tribute band – are one of the star attractions of The Smithwicks Music Trail, which offers free live music all over the city.
The man who makes it all happen is local publican John Cleere, who can be heard discussing the A-Z of the festival on the SoundCloud link (above).
Nick says:For one weekend a year, Kilkenny lives the Americana dream.
BETA-MAX is Dubliner Trevor Courtney’s brainchild. For his third single, Courtney has drafted in Fight Like Apes singer MayKay to add a sassy lead vocal that puts the fun in funk.
Fitting somewhere between Garbage and Daft Punk, BETA-MAX hopes to have an album out before Christmas.
Nick says:The playful animation in the video is truly ALPHA.
Nebraskan Josh Rouse’s freewheeling feelgood vibes may not appeal to death metal aficionados but his ‘Nashville’ album from 2005 is a quiet masterpiece. (Check out the atmospheric video for ‘Quiet Town’, shot in Spain).
Rouse is joined in this double-headliner by California-born folk-rocker Grant-Lee Phillips, whose former band Grant Lee Buffalo were a regular visitor to these shores back in the mid-‘90s. Check out last year’s ‘Widdershins’ album. (See the video for ‘King Of Catastrophes’).
The third single from Dave ‘Hingo’ Hingerty’s new project sees the former Frames drummer team with some of the best musicians around, including guitarist Conor Brady (The Blades, The Drays) and bassist Robbie Malone (David Gray’s band).
But the star of the show here is singer Carol Keogh (The Plague Monkeys, Autamata), top, whose lead vocal is vibrant and intriguing.
Keep an eye out for the album, due later this year.
