The RUC George Cross Widows Association has called for a halt to plans to build a peace and reconciliation centre at the site of the former Maze prison. They addressed their plea to Northern Ireland First Minister Peter Robinson.

Mr Robinson’s DUP colleague Jeffrey Donaldson, who is MP for the area, said he could guarantee that “there will be nothing in the new peace centre that will glorify terrorism”. “I put on the uniform of the Crown to fight against the IRA, I had members of my family circle murdered by the IRA,” Mr Donaldson told the programme. “I am not going to stand over anything that would glorify the actions of the IRA in any sense whatsoever.”

 

Meanwhile, 50 yards from the entrance to the former prison is a shrine (above) to UDA/UFF prisoners.

There is always a tiny minority of individuals who behave inappropriately. When someone on the pro-life side does so, we must not hesitate to name it and make it clear that such behaviour is wrong and counterproductive. But we cannot allow it to distract from the main issues in the debate.

There will be plenty of time after this phase of the campaign to expose the lies and misrepresentation that has gone on.

And let’s encourage everyone we know to stay positive and do the cause proud.

A woman who allegedly fell on a wet floor while dancing at a Dublin nightclub with a work colleague has sued for damages. Ciara O’Connell was allegedly dancing backwards to a song by Shakira in a style from the film ‘Dirty Dancing’ when the accident happened at Copper Face Jacks, Harcourt Street, the High Court heard.

When counsel for the club put it to Ms O’Connell that she had been dancing in a ‘Dirty Dancing’ manner, and that Mr Humphries had leaned back too far and fell over, Ms O’Connell said it felt like he had slipped. “I could not say why he fell,” she said. Nobody suggested to her she was dancing in a reckless manner, she said.

k-bigpicThe interdenominational Christian organisation Exodus International that sought to cure gay people of their homosexual desires has shut up shop after 37 years.

In an open letter to the LBGT community, founder Alan Chambers has apologised for the pain and hurt inflicted on people over nearly four decades saying that the group had “been imprisoned in a worldview that’s neither honoring toward our fellow human beings, nor biblical.”

There were several years that I conveniently omitted my ongoing same-sex attractions. I was afraid to share them as readily and easily as I do today. They brought me tremendous shame and I hid them in the hopes they would go away. Looking back, it seems so odd that I thought I could do something to make them stop. Today, however, I accept these feelings as parts of my life that will likely always be there. The days of feeling shame over being human in that way are long over, and I feel free simply accepting myself as my wife and family does. As my friends do. As God does.
