The village of Oymyakon in the Siberian tundra is considered to be the coldest inhabited place with an average winter temperature of −50 °C.

No crops, just meat. Most toilets are outhouses due to frozen plumbing. Cars must be kept running while outside. Kiwi photographer Amos Chapple travelled there from Yakutsk (the coldest city in the world) and documented his nippy trip. He told Weather.com:

I remember feeling like the cold was physically gripping my legs, the other surprise was that occasionally my saliva would freeze into needles that would prick my lips.

On the eve of St Nicholas’ Day (the 6th of December) drink-fuelled revellers dress up as the fearsome horned demon Krampus, shaking their cow-bell belts and running around scaring children to remind them what happens when they’re naughty at Christmas.
