1. An eager podcaster gets kidnapped in rural Canada and mutilated to look like a walrus. His girlfriend and best friend lead the search.

2. The idea for the movie came during the recording of a podcast by the film’s writer and director Kevin Smith. He and producer Scott Mosier were discussing a Gumtree ad where a homeowner was offering a room free of charge, if the lodger agreed to dress like a walrus. Sound familiar?

3. The post on Gumtree turned out to be a prank by poet and messer Chris Parkinson. Smith eventually hired Parkinson as an associate producer.

4. Johnny Depp and Lily-Rose, Kevin Smith and Harley Quinn. Bring your daughter to work day.

5. The entire cast of Tusk has returned for the spin-off Yoga-Hosers, an action adventure about two yoga enthusiasts.

What you may need to know:

1. We had a quick peek at this back in April. It’s a suspense thriller based around a couple’s dysfunctional marriage. When his wife disappears, all the evidence appears to point toward a murder committed by the seemingly cold and unemotional husband.

2. Gone Girl (2012) was a huge bestseller. The author Gillian Flynn has also penned the film’s screenplay but promises that it will deviate from the book and have a new ending.

3. As online film promotion goes this has one of the creepiest.

4. Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails fame is looking after the score and has shared that “it’s a nasty film“.

5. Leading lady Rosamund Pike beat out Charlize Theron, Natalie Portman, Emily Blunt, Abbie Cornish and Olivia Wilde to play ‘Amazing’ Amy.  FIGHT!

What you may need to know:

1. Two journalists land a gig interviewing Kim Jung-un, the supreme leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. They are then ordered by the CIA to assassinate him.

2. The movie was shot in Vancouver. This is not the ‘Canadian Caper‘ (2012).

3. North Korea is none too happy about this film and not just because they can’t figure out what James Franco is up to either.

4. NK’s news agency promised “stern” and “merciless” retaliation if the film makes it to cinemas. The North Korean administration warned of a “decisive and merciless countermeasure”.

5. The country’s UN ambassador complained to the UN about the film on the grounds that “the production and distribution of such a film on the assassination of an incumbent head of a sovereign state should be regarded as the most undisguised sponsoring of terrorism as well as an act of war.”

6. They even requested President Obama step in and pull the plug. Crazy.

7. Team America (2004) will protect us.

8. In post production they digitally altered thousands of buttons worn by the characters in the film as they depict the actual hardware worn by the North Korean military.

9. According to the Executive Director of the Center for Korean-American Peace Kim Jung-un plans to watch the film.

What you may need to know:

1. Iranian Canadian journalist Maziar Bahari was imprisoned and brutally interrogated for 118 days while reporting for Newsweek on the 2009 Iranian presidential elections.

2. Bahari’s interrogator would only identify himself as ‘Rosewater’, hence the title.

3. The film has been adapted from the bestseller memoir ‘Then They Came For Me: A Family’s Story Of Love, Captivity and Survival (2011)’ by Jon Stewart of the Daily Show. Stewart is also making his directorial debut here.

4. The Daily Show has another connection to this story. This interview between Bahari and Jason Jones, the comedic foreign affairs correspondent for the Daily Show, was used as evidence of Bahari’s association with American spies by the Republican Guard.

5. It’s a young Che without the motorbike.

6. Iranian State TV have described the film as “an ultra-formulaic movie commissioned by his masters, a story of the American-Israeli sedition in 2009”, as “anti-Iranian propaganda” and says Stewart’s clearly being manipulated by the “Zionist lobby.”

2. This time they have the second greatest rock musician/actor in the world in Slash.

4. Ten years have passed since we first became men.

5. They pushed the movie release forward a week so not to coincide with the release of 50 Shades of Grey (2015). There is only so much matinee space to go around.

6. The movie poster is a nod to the oft-parodied Coppertone Sunscreen ad from the 50s.

What you may need to know:

1. Jake Gyllenhaal plays Lou Bloom, an ambitious career-driven journalist. He begins following the emergency services to crime scenes in the hope of being first to break a story. This goes so well that he starts staging his own.

2. Sounds vaguely similar to the TV presenter Wallace Souza, who was accused of ordering a series of murders to boost ratings for his reality crime show, Brazil’s answer to America’s Most Wanted.

3. So nothing to do with Marvel’s teleporting blue elf then.

4. Here’s hoping that the Network (1976) vibe isn’t misleading. The 24 hour news cycles’ unquenchable thirst for content is  begging for satire.

5. Gyllenhaal’s turn in last year’s Prisoners was immense.

1. Widowed Amelia’s (Essie Davis) son is convinced that there’s a monster lurking in their home. When a pop-up book called ‘The Babadook’ shows up on the doorstep, she start’s sensing a sinister presence all around her. DUN DUN DUUUUUUN!

2. The Babadook is the debut feature of writer/director Jennifer Kent.

3. The positive press and word-of-mouth for this has been insane since it premiered at Sundance back in January.

4. Rather than take the easy CGI route, Kent’s decision to stick with analogue effects has earned her comparisons with Wes Anderson and Terry Gilliam.

5. If the monster is half as creepy as the kid, then we’ll be sleeping with the lights on.

6. Broadsheet Prognosis: A creative shot in the arm for a genre languishing in “found footage” mire.

4. If you’re of “a certain vintage,” then it’ll remind you of a time when video libraries were filled with cheese from companies like Embassy and Gorgon Video, and every movie had a cover like this.

5. The scene where Wolfcop kills three bank robbers in pig masks is worth the price of entry alone.

1. Ig Perrish (Daniel Radcliffe) wakes up one morning to find horns growing from his forehead. As you do.

2. The horns have the inexplicable effect of causing complete strangers to share their deepest secrets and impulses. Like Ryan Tubridy.

3. This horror/comedy is based on the novel by Stephen King’s son, Joe Hill. Some of you may remember him as Billy, the creepy kid in George A. Romero’s Creepshow (1987), written by his dad.

4. Daniel Radcliffe has admitted that he’s not the greatest actor but we hear he rocked in The Cripple of Inishmaan on Broadway.

5. It can’t be easy growing up on screen – just ask Shia LaBeouf. He was originally down to play the lead but had some issues.

1. Hilary Swank and Tommy Lee Jones embark upon a mission of mercy across the harsh wild west.

2. This is Jones’ second time as player/manager after he directed and starred in The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (2005). His bleak and furrowed brow was also favourited by location scouts before settling on Georgia.

3. The film is based on a Glendon Swarthout novel. This is Swarthout’s seventh novel to be committed to film including  The Shootist (1976) and Where The Boys Are (1960).

4. It features mother and daughter Meryl Streep and Grace Gummer.

5. Paul Newman initially held the rights and tried to develop the film.

6. It’s a western with a feminist subtext.
