What you may need to know:

1. Paranormal Activity 4? Seriously? Yes, seriously. Do you know how cheap these things are to make? This found footage crap is a licence to print cash.

2. The original Paranormal Activity (2007) remains the most profitable film ever made.

3. Rather than attempt to ape documentary film-making, these days they just hire actual documentary filmmakers to do ’em: PA3 & 4 were directed by Henry Joost and , Ariel Schulman who did the controversial Catfish (2010)

5. Wouldn’t it be hilarious if Scary Movie stars The Wayans Brothers did a found footage parody?  No, it wouldn’t.

Release Date (Ireland): October

What you may need to know.

1. All right, the show’s been hit and miss of late, but Matt Smith is still a GREAT Doctor Who, and you do get the odd gem, like last year’s Neil Gaiman episode.

2. The first episode of the new season is entitled Asylum Of The Daleks.

3. This year each episode is self-contained: no two-parters, no confusing story arcs. We like it.

4. Also, they’re FINALLY getting rid of annoying couple Rory & Amy. For good, this time.

5. Don’t worry, The Doctor’s already sorted for a new assistant. She used to be in Emmerdale.

6. The new series features everybody from Mark ‘Fast Show’ Williams and Diana Rigg to Stephen Berkoff and Dublin’s very own Liam Cunningham. Plus Weeping Angels!

7.  2013 is the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who. We’re excited. They had better get Eccleston and Tennant back, for starters.

Broadcast Date: From August 25 (US August 27)

What you may need to know.

1. Dollhouse is the new film by Kirsten Sheridan, daughter of Jim and director of Disco Pigs (2001) and August Rush (2007).

2. Cry nepotism all you want, she has an Oscar nomination and you don’t.

3. Dollhouse screened at the Dublin Film Festival in February, before playing Berlin, where the reviews were more than decent.

4. Sheridan is one of the driving forces (along with John ‘Once’ Carney and Lance ‘Kisses’ Daily) behind The Factory, a filmmaker-friendly ‘creative space’ in Ringsend. Dollhouse was produced under its auspices.

5. If there’s anyone out there still complaining about Irish film, go and make your own. Seriously.

What you may need to know:

1. The Paperboy is already known as that movie where Nicole Kidman pisses on Zac Efron. Seriously.

2. The reviews from Cannes were nigh upon catastrophic, with a few passionate defenders. Some already suggest it’s a future camp classic.

3. Matthew McConaughey’s just experienced the biggest career turnabout since John Travolta in Pulp Fiction. A year ago, he was a punchline who couldn’t keep his shirt on. Now he’s working with Scorsese.

4. John Cusack wears the haunted look of someone in need of a McConaughey-esque career enema. He shouldn’t have turned down the lead in Breaking Bad.

5. As for McConaughey, well, he just keeps living.

Release date (Ireland): TBC (October US)

What you may need to know:

1. Between this, World War Z (2013) and Ridley Scott’s The Counselor (2013), Brad Pitt may be about to enter a long-overdue bad-ass phase.

2.  Killing Them Softly is a crime flick based on a novel by hard boiled supremo George V. Higgins, who wrote The Friends Of Eddie Coyle, later turned into one of THE great ’70s crime flicks.

3. It’s directed by Andrew Dominik, who made Chopper (2000) and The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford (2007), both stone cold masterpieces.

4. And what a supporting cast: we’re talking Richard Jenkins, Ray Liotta, Sam Shepard, Ben ‘Animal Kingdom’ Mendelsohn and Tony motherfucking Soprano, AKA James Gandolfini.

5. Factoid: this is the third time Gandolfini has played a hitman in a Brad Pitt movie, following True Romance (1993) and The Mexican (2001). Which reminds us, we really need to get some beer, and some cleaning products.

What you may need to know

1. John Dies At The End is a future cult classic.

2. It’s based on the novel, itself a cult classic.

3. It stars Paul Giamatti. We’ll watch Giamatti in pretty much anything.

4. It’s directed by Don Coscarelli, the mad genius behind the Phantasm
movies.

5. Coscarelli also gave us Bruce Campbell as Elvis in the sublime Bubba
Ho-Tep
(2002).

6. Make no mistake, this is a b-movie. But we’ll take a demented b-flick
over the MOR crap Hollywood is churning out these days.

What you may need to know:

1. TV is the new movies. But you may have noticed that one already. Give us Breaking Bad or Louie over a trip down the multiplex anytime. .

2. Boardwalk Empire has divided viewers. It’s a slow burn. By the end of Season Two, it was rocking. .

3. There’s only one way to describe this teaser: Hardcore Buscemi.

Screening Date (Ireland): September (US)

What you may need to know:

1. While the debate about Irish cinema rages on (and on, and on) we present the new film by Pat Collins. He’s from Cork.

2. Collins is a documentary filmmaker of note, and a prolific, award-winning one at that.

3. Silence is his first fiction feature. If you think the trailer’s a bit slow, that’s OK. It’s meant to be.

Release Date: Out Now

What you MAY need to know:

1. The trailer is five minutes plus. And it’s mental.

2. Cloud Atlas is based on the novel by David Mitchell. No, not the
Peep Show dude.

3. It’s co-directed by The Wachowskis, who did The Matrix trilogy, and
Tom Tykwer, who did Run Lola Run (1998).

4. The movie stars Tom Hanks, Halle Berry and Hugh Grant in multiple
roles. That’s right, Hugh Grant is required to display range.

5. Reclusive Wachowski brother Larry has had a sex change and is now
Lana Wachowski. Yes, seriously.

6. You can’t fault the ambition. Bonus points for the random Irish
thug and – especially – ghetto Tom Hanks at 00’46.

Release date (Ireland): Early 2013

What you may need to know:

1. Gangster Squad is the first Hollywood movie directly affected by the Aurora massacre.

2. This trailer was originally meant to be playing in front of The Dark Knight begins. Now the trailer’s been pulled, and the movie is being re-edited.

3. Why? A sequence that occurs round the 2’00 mark in the trailer is now being removed from the movie, on the ground of sensitivity.

4. To accommodate re-shoots, it’s been delayed until January of next year.

5. It happened before – they took the Twin Towers out of Zoolander (2001) after 9/11. Seriously.

6. Question: would Quentin Tarantino get away with the ending of Inglorious Basterds now? We think not.

Release Date (Ireland): Early 2013
