In 2012, Alisha Jordan, then aged 18, from Co Meath arrived in New York to play Gaelic football for the Cavan Ladies of New York…

At the peak of her fitness and hard work after the championship Alisha looked forward to getting ready for the next season…Walking home from a night out in New York Alisha was horrifically attacked by a male stranger who smashed her in the face with a concrete slab.
Alisha had to undergo two reconstructive surgeries, the first, an eight hour surgery to insert 10 metal plates and twenty-two screws to re-build her fractured skull. She then had reconstructive surgery to her nose to build it again.

Regaining her sight, walking and then running, against all of the odds and the doctors requests, Alisha worked every day at rebuilding her strength and friends, family and her team mates stood by her all the way….

Alisha continues to play for Cavan in New York and she also plays for the New York team who are due to play the Junior Championship in Ireland this August.
“I love the sport now more than ever and it will always be a vital part of my life. Since I was young and playing with my home club Skryne [Co Meath] I fell in love with the amazing support system that surrounds being part of a team…Above all, the whole attack made me not realise the bad that’s in the world that could hurt me, but the unbelievable good that’s in our everyday life. I’m very happy the latter outweighs the first”

[Former Garda John Wilson outside the Dáil in January]

John Wilson was not in uniform and off-duty when he attended a case in the presence of Walter and Genevieve Smith, who were co-defendants in a case being heard, in 2012.

Arising from this, he was found to have breached Garda regulations, after he refused to explain why he attended the court hearing.

Mr Wilson went to the High Court challenging this finding and this morning he lost this challenge.

Breaking News reports:

“The High Court has ruled that the garda authorities were entitled to ask John Wilson for an explanation as to why he sat beside the defendants during a court case while off duty.

“Ms Justice Iseult O’Malley notes that the trial involved a long running dispute between neighbours in an estate in Virgina Co Cavan and his attendance could impinge ‘upon the public perception of the force as a whole’

“She has found that Gda Wilson should have at least explained that his private life was at issue but instead he suggested a ‘degree of bad faith’ by asking what was being insinuated about him.”

Following the decision, Mr Wilson said:

“I will be considering today’s judgment very carefully with my legal team.”

Cavan man Ciaran ‘Jaffa’ Brady. Jaffa has been living in Sydney, Australia for the past 4 years. His home club Ballinagh were playing Cavan Gaels in the Cavan SFC final Ciaran’s  brother, friends and clubmen are 7/1 underdogs seeking to capture their first ever senior title in the club’s 125th anniversary year. As much as Ciaran tried he couldn’t make it home for the game. The best he could do is to follow the match online through local radio station Northern Sound at 5am in the morning…

[Reporter]: “Six episodes of ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ were shot in three weeks. Was that a gruelling experience?”
[Liz O’Donnell]:”It was. There were late nights, early starts and we worked right through weekends. You had to be “camera ready” at 6.30 each morning, which is no mean feat for women of a certain age.
Also, filming took place during the summer heat wave, which was just horrific. I remember we were in Cavan town one day and people were just sprawled out in the shade. It was like Calcutta.”
