Consider the advantages of the canals [Royal and Grand Dublin] for cycle tourism – the generally flat terrain allows easy cycling; there are almost no access difficulties, as the land is in public ownership; and, for most of the route, there is no danger from motor vehicles. At present the towpaths are not developed for cycling and thus are grassy and rough in places, but this could be easily resolved by gravelling the paths, as has been done on the Great Western Greenway in Co Mayo. That initiative proved to be a huge success and has revitalised towns along the route. Creating two new cycling routes along the canals could bring similar benefits to such towns as Longford and Tullamore, which at present are not known for being tourism hotspots.

Hövding is a collar for bicyclists, worn around the neck. The collar contains a folded up airbag that you’ll only see if you happen to have an accident. The airbag is shaped like a hood, surrounding and protecting the bicyclist’s head. The trigger mechanism is controlled by sensors which pick up the abnormal movements of a bicyclist in an accident.

From Trinity College, Dublin:
The findings of the largest survey to date on the perception of safety among cyclists in Dublin have been published by engineering researchers at Trinity College Dublin, University College Cork and University of Hong Kong.
For the purpose of the study, a questionnaire based survey of 1,954 cyclists was conducted to gain an insight into the different aspects related to the safety experience of cyclists in Dublin.
Analysis of the responses revealed that cycling is perceived as an unsafe mode of travel compared to driving even by existing cyclists. Careless and reckless bus/taxi/car driver attitude has a significantly negative impact on the safety experience of cyclists. “Campaigns to encourage cyclist-driver cooperation within the network may help combat Dublin’s ‘road rage’,” explained TCD researcher Dr Bidisha Ghosh.

Can anyone explain what is supposed to be going on here?
Have bicycles now got right of way to swerve across busy traffic lanes? This campaign of haphazard cycle lanery in Dundalk would be funny if it wasn’t so bloody dangerous. Two lane streets are being made single lane (with double cycle lanes enclosed with barriers) and nobody knows who’s got right of way any more.
Instead of road markings, poles and slabs of concrete randomly mark out cycle lanes, in some cases car slalom through meandering narrow car lanes to accommodate cyclists we never see. Very curious. and expensive.
Who knew Dundalk Town Council has such healthy coffers?
Anyone?
@broadsheet_ie Only in limerick would a cyclist use a garda car as a rest when traffic lights are red. twitter.com/PaudieNewstalk…

I wanted the cover to be inviting, welcoming the reader into the rest of the cycling issue and thought a stylised shop front might be fun to draw.
