Photographer Klaus Leidorf captures what he describes as ‘aerial archaeology’ from the vantage point of his Cesna 172 as he flies over the beaches, industrial zones and farmlands of Germany.

The image stabilisation of his Canon EOS 5D Mark III allows for fairly eye-watering detail.

In a front-page piece headlined “Irish Euro greetings to the chancellor”, Germany’s mass-market paper told its eight million readers the Irish were “pulling the chancellor’s leg”.

*snigger*

“Merkel has the reputation in Europe of being a tough-as-nails defender of saving, who doesn’t accept a lack of willingness to suffer. That’s something the Irish see humorously.”

*chortle*

“For their Euro aid package, they promised to work hard. Which they do. Except when it’s the European Championships.”

Oh.

GERMANY HAS confirmed it wants an EU-appointed “budget commissioner” sent to Greece with powers to override its government’s budget policy.
Berlin’s demand would also apply to Ireland and any other bailout recipient that consistently missed the targets set out in its rescue plans, a well-placed European source said yesterday.

The source recognised that Ireland’s bailout was on track but said Berlin was anxious to avoid any repeat of the Greek situation, where the authorities have repeatedly failed to implement promised reforms.

Greece is resisting the pressure from Germany. “Anyone who puts a nation before the dilemma of ‘economic assistance or national dignity’ ignores some key historical lessons,” said finance minister Evangelos Venizelos.

The prospect of an Irish referendum to endorse Europe’s new fiscal treaty hangs in the balance as EU leaders make a final push today for a pact to toughen the enforcement of budget rules.

At issue now for the Government is the principle of adopting an international treaty, which will impose binding obligations on the Dáil and Seanad, without the consent of the people.

This is how desperate European investors are for a safe-haven: They’re paying Germany to “borrow” money.

Germany just held a 3.9 billion EUR auction of 6 month bills. The interest rate: -0.0122%.

Essentially Germany is a bank, where the depositor pays to warehouse money. If you’re worried that no other institution will stay solvent during that time, it obviously makes tremendous sense to pay Germany.

Germany Is Now Officially Getting Paid To Borrow Money (Business Insider)

At a recent rock concert attended by right wing extremists, the anti-extremist group Exit Deutschland, anonymously distributed 250 black skull and crossbones t-shirts with the motto “Hardcore Rebels – National and Free.”

Once laundered however, the skull motif was designed to vanish, revealing the legend “Was Dein T-Shirt Kann, Kannst Du Auch.” (“What your t-shirt can do, so can you”) and contact details for Exit Deutschland, whose co-founder Bernd Wagner says the aim was to ”simply present an offer that people will remember if they have a change of heart”.
