A new documentary series on RTÉ One gives an unprecedented insight into the way science, technology and data are changing Gaelic Games.

The four-part Irish language series GAA Nua, presented by All-Ireland winning Kerry footballer Dara Ó Cinnéide (top), will reveal the lengths that GAA teams across the country are going to in their quest for victory.

Over four half-hours, starting tonight at 7.30pm on RTÉ One, Ó Cinnéide travels throughout Ireland meeting the managers, coaches, players, scientists, statisticians and medics using science and technology to revolutionise the way Gaelic Games are played.

He asks if there is an advantage to the technology and expertise being used by teams across the country and whether the sport is better off without it. Does technology help or hinder as players put in blood, sweat and tears as they strive for success?

AIG Insurance today released the first video of its three-part mini documentary series, ‘Playing for Dublin and Fighting for Ireland’.

The short series focuses on three individuals; Frank Burke, Tilly Simpson and Charlie McMahon, who each represented Dublin at intercounty level, but who also fought for independence in Ireland in 1916.

The first video released as part of the mini-series tells the story of Frank Burke )above). Frank, who studied under Padraig Pearse at St. Enda’s school, travelled into the GPO with Pearse by tram on Easter Monday, 1916..

After the Rising, Frank would arguably become Dublin’s greatest ever player, winning two All-Ireland hurling titles and three in football. On Bloody Sunday, while playing for Dublin, Burke who was being marked by Michael Hogan was shot by British forces.

The ‘Playing for Dublin and Fighting for Ireland’ mini-documentary series is produced by Paul Cahill and narrated by Paul’s father, Des Cahill….

Ahmed Soda (top), age 11, and his family moved to Belfast late last year, fleeing the war in Syria.

In January, Ahmed tried out for football at local club Patrick Sarsfields, and despite some early jitters, has settled into the game helping the club break a dry spell in local under-12 silverware.

Ahmed, from the besieged city of Aleppo, also picked up a hurley for the first time in June, and is a natural, according to coaches.

Send him back.

Ahead of Sunday’s GAA Football final replay between Dublin and Mayo.

A heartwarming story that I really want to share with GAA fans…

My son, David Barrett (6) has been to every Mayo game this year, apart from the drawn final. We struggled to get tickets and it was breaking our poor little man’s heart. We had to take down the poster of Aidan O’Shea from his room as he was so upset.

Then an incredible thing happened…

My husband was having a pint in our local pub Mulvihill’s, when he started telling the story to our local barman Darragh (a Corkman better known as “Hightower” on account of his small stature!).

A stranger sitting on his own at the bar overheard the whole story, and fell into conversation with my husband about GAA, the price of milk, and all kinds of other things.

He left the bar late in the evening and said to my husband “your son’s name is David, right?” My husband replied yes.

He never knew anything about the man, apart from the fact that his name was Conor and he had very pronounced dimples when he smiled.

Two days ago, a letter arrived to Mulvihill’s addressed to “Master David Barrett, Mayo’s biggest fan” and Hightower’s jaw nearly dropped when he saw a ticket to the final in the envelope!

Little Davey wrote him a letter (above) and I just want to let Conor know, if he ever sees this, that his kindness will never be forgotten.

However, Ms Mulherin, who previously obtained tickets when she was a TD for Mayo, criticised the GAA over its approach, saying: “In my view, this is clear discrimination by the GAA in relation to members of the Oireachtas.”

Ms Mulherin said she does not understand why senators are treated differently to TDs.

She claimed senators are equally supportive of the GAA at a local level and that this seems to have been overlooked by the Croke Park authorities.
