From top: the long-promised Dublin MetroLink; Paolo Serpi, Italian Ambassador to Ireland

“Try to imagine what it means to have done four, no, five lines in Rome. In a city like Rome, to dig 100m down in Rome, what does that mean? But we have done it!

I want to know if we can do something, we, as Italians, for you?

“I don’t care if the Irish underground in Dublin is made by the Italians. I am just metaphorically breaking your… I don’t want to use bad words, but if you make a common effort you can do it!”

This morning.

MetroLink – for which the cost is reported to have increased to €10bn – will not see construction start for at least another ten years.

This would mean its earliest completion date would be 2037 – ten years later than originally planned.

The project’s business case is currently being assessed by Government and according to the strategy it is still expected to go for planning approval next year.

Luas Finglas – the first of the Luas extensions – was originally meant to be built by 2028. The earliest completion date is now expected to be around 2034.

Meanwhile other Luas extensions that will not be going ahead until after 2031 are Poolbeg, Lucan, and Bray.

Minister Eamon Ryan speaking to media before entering Dublin Castle for this morning’s meeting of the Cabinet.

This afternoon.

Dublin Commuter Coalition’s Chairperson, Kevin Carter, said:

“We’ve been hearing of delays to MetroLink and DART+ since the 19th of September and we still haven’t received an explanation from the Minister for Transport about why these delays are occurring or a firm estimate of when the projects are expected to finish.

In the case of MetroLink, four years into a ten year project, we were hoping for something more concrete than the Minister saying he’s hopeful about it opening under seven years late

“The people of North Dublin have been told about these plans for the past 50 years with one proposal for a metro already designed and cancelled in recent years. They deserve a lot more from the government than the confusion and rumours that have surrounded these projects for the past 10 days.”

The unveiling of the new route of Dublin’s MetroLink rail line. The revised plan will run from Estuary North of Swords to Dublin’s South city at Charlemont, serving Dublin Airport and the City Centre.

Meanwhile..

he NTA has also decided not to use Na Fianna GAA pitches in Glasnevin for construction and to build a smaller underground station on the neighbouring grounds of Home Farm soccer club.

Other changes include a decision to move the underground stop on O’Connell St from the beneath the road to under the nearby site of the old Carlton cinema, which is due to be developed as a shopping centre.

More as we get it.
