Commenting after being told by the PSNI that the dissident Republican group New IRA is planning a bomb attack on the car of a Sinn Féin member, the party’s deputy leader Michelle O Neill said:

“We have been told this planned attack could happen anywhere in the north.
This is literally a threat against thousands of Sinn Féin members and their families in the north.
…This latest threat shows once again that these groups are in conflict with their own community.
…Let me be very clear. Sinn Féin will not be deterred from pursuing our objective of a united Ireland.”

Channel 4 broadcast an interview with a member of the “New IRA” who said any border infrastructure, as a consequence of Brexit, would be a “legitimate target for attack”.

The man spoke to Channel 4 News on condition that his identity would be disguised and his voice would not be recorded.

So his words were spoken by an actor for the recording – drawing a significant response from viewers about his accent.

Gardaí believe the package (above) discovered this morning at the An Post depot on the Dock Road in Limerick was returned through the postal system after it failed to reach its destination in the UK.

The office is the National Return Letter Centre, which acts as the depot for all undeliverable mail in the country.

The Army Bomb Disposal Team is at the scene in Limerick.
