RUN!

The biggest solar storm in five years is battering our planet right now, and may cause disruptions to satellites, power grids and communications networks over the next 24 hours, space weather experts say.

Two strong solar flares erupted from the surface of the sun late Tuesday (March 6) [image above – flare in upper left of pic] , blasting a wave of plasma and charged particles toward Earth. After speeding through space at 4 million mph, this eruption of material — called a coronal mass ejection (CME) — should be hitting Earth now.

A month before the phenomenon known as the ‘midnight sun’, the polar sunset and sunrise are separated by this magnificent 8 to 12 hour lightshow – the sun barely dipping below the horizon before rising again.

Captured earlier this month at Norway’s Lofoten archipelago by photographer Mr TSO.

Gorgeous – a full screener.

‘This phenomenal picture (and close up) was taken by astrophotographer Alan Friedman on October 20th….You can see sunspots, giant convection cells, and the gas that follows magnetic loops piercing the Sun’s surface.

The (second pic) shows prominences leaping up off the edge and silhouetted against the sky. They look so delicate, probably because they make the Sun look fuzzy, like a comfy blanket… but have no doubts on the fury and scale of what you’re seeing here. See that little bright spot on the plume on the left, just above the Sun’s edge?

That spot is the same size as the Earth.’
