Marin O’Moore (left with her daughter) outside Leinster House within the last hour.
Marin is among a number of symphysiotomy survivors attending a dail debate today on the matter. A symphysiotomy is a surgical procedure to widen the pelvis during childbirth.
It is claimed that Irish obstetricians favoured this method instead of Caesarean sections because women subjected to repeated Caesareans ‘might be tempted to use contraception’.
The procedure was carried out on 1,500 women. The last surgery was 1992.
Today is the first time the issue has been debated in the dail.
