Via Nailed It
Every year since 2000, London’s Sepentine Gallery has invited a leading architect or artist to create a temporary structure on its front lawn. Last year, it was Ai Weiwei. In 2008, Frank Gehry had a go.
This year, it’s the turn of Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto, who created a 350 square meter lattice of steel poles, illuminated by LED lights installed by London-based United Visual Artists, which are designed (along with suitable sound effects) to mimic an electrical storm.
Stanley Kubrick would have turned 85 on this day last week. With the help of the director’s brother-in-law, right hand man and executive producer Jan Harlan, the BFI has assembled an extensive list of Kubrick-approved movies.
The first and only top ten compliled by the director himself was the following list of personal faves submitted to Cinema magazine in 1969:
1. I Vitelloni (Fellini, 1953)
2. Wild Strawberries (Bergman, 1957)
3. Citizen Kane (Welles, 1941)
4. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (Huston, 1948)
5. City Lights (Chaplin, 1931)
6. Henry V (Olivier, 1944)
7. La notte (Antonioni, 1961)
8. The Bank Dick (Fields, 1940)
9. Roxie Hart (Wellman, 1942)
10. Hell’s Angels (Hughes, 1930)
And that’s just for starters.

What Goes Up writes:
Bank of Ireland announced new losses today. Yesterday AIB announced losses for the year-to-date: Both banks’ CEOs have stated that part of the reason for the losses is the provisions they have to make against loans going bad i.e. people not paying their debts.
And with that Orwellian twist, it now transpires that the very people who have bailed out the banks with €64 Billion are the reason for the banks continuing poor performance.
The fact that both banks are the very definition of zombie banks (and will continue to be for another 5 years) does not appear to be a significant factor to either “gentleman”.
