The Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists wishes to allay the fears of the public following statements made the Seanad this week during the debate on the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill 2013.

The destructive methods described for second trimester termination of pregnancy are currently not carried out in this jurisdiction, nor will they be in the future. The procedure currently practised in the Republic of Ireland is induction of labour using medication called prostaglandins. This will not change as a result of the enactment of this legislation.

If a viable foetus is delivered, all efforts are made to preserve its life where possible.

A press release issued this afternoon by the Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in response to statements made in the Seanad this week.

Ever wanted to be a superhero without having to wear a cape?

From Belong To (the national LGBT  youth service):

It’s a simple enough idea. Every year we provide information and materials to schools that can help to explain the problems of homophobia and discrimination to both pupils and teachers alike. The schools are then encouraged to run events and raise awareness of bullying in their school. It’s a vital step towards helping stop homophobia – and helping young LGBT people to value their own identities and live happy, fulfilled lives.

But, to reach out to all 750 secondary schools across Ireland, we urgently need help from kind and compassionate people who are willing to Stand Up! Could you be one of these Superheroes? Will you help us reach out to vulnerable young people?

What you may need to know:

1. It’s written by Cormac McCarthy, his first original screenplay.

2.
It’s directed by Ridley Scott. We forgive him for Prometheus (2012).

3. It stars Michael Fassbender, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Brad Pitt and Javier Bardem, with his best hair-do since No Country For Old Men (2007).

4. It feels like Ridley’s channeling his late, great brother Tony. No bad thing.

5. Fassbender’s got a Steve McQueen movie, a Terrence Malick movie and another X-Men movie in the can.

6. Broadsheet Prognosis: No Country For A Kerry-German.
