Michelle Darmody writes:

I run The Cake Cafe on Pleasant Place, Dublin 8. We have always taken great pride in sourcing from Irish food producers when writing our daily menus. We followed through with this ethos when we started to make home wears. All of our bits and pieces are designed by Niall and Nigel of Pony Design and are made here in Ireland. The range is registered with The Crafts Council of Ireland and are beautifully finished. It would be great to have them mentioned on broadsheet. If you buy from our site we can ship around the world (or they are available in a few gift shops around the country).

I start by collecting everyday objects from the recent past — things made obsolete by technological changes and time; I then whitewash them with ordinary house paint as a method of erasure, and then draw directly onto their surfaces with charcoal to create visual hybrids that appear to vacillate between drawing and photography, black-and-white and color, signifier and signified, copy and original. No digital manipulation is involved, but the camera’s monocular point of view is imperative.

In this clip from the Norwegian/Swedish talkshow Skavlan, chess grandmaster Magnus Carlsen takes on Microsoft gazillionaire boffin Bill Gates.

To make the match fair, Gates is given two minutes on the clock while Carlsen has just 30 seconds to work with.
