Would you like to play chess with other women?

Your move.

John McMorrow, of the Irish Chess Union, writes:

I know you don’t normally do this but… The Stephen’s Green Hibernian Club have generously offered to become the host to Irish Women’s chess meetings every two weeks with a launch event at 2pm on Sunday, January 22nd. .

It will feature a blitz event, the presentation of the new Irish Women’s Championship perpetual trophy to current champion Monika Gedvilaite, a lecture from Grandmaster Alexander Baburin as well as other events.

SGHC will provide complimentary tea, coffee and sandwiches to all attendees. The launch event is open to any women who are welcome to bring a plus one.

Yesterday.

John McMorrow of The Irish Chess Union, writes:

We were out on Grafton Street/South Anne Street yesterday promoting the Irish Chess Union and the film Queen of Katwe which is coming out this week and is a truly inspiring story of a girl in Uganda who overcomes poverty to become a chess master. So we thought we’d give a little demonstration of blitz chess (well, blitz chess on a big board).

Against the CLOCK?

John McMorrow, of the Irish Chess Union,  writes:

I know you don’t normally do this… but the Bray Rapidplay Chess competition is on this Sunday, in the Esplanade Hotel on Bray’s beautiful seafront.

The event will feature young and old, with experienced internationals as well as beginners. The competition adds some extra uncertainty by being played under strict time limits which ensure quick and entertaining games.

Every player who enters is guaranteed 7 games which will mostly be against players of their own standard.

The winner will pick up a cheque for €500  while there are a variety of other prizes for the various standards. There were 106 entrants last year and the organisers are hoping to top that number this year.

Here is the current world chess champion playing a similar format of game to what we’ll be playing: We won’t be quite as fast or else it would be a very short day but just to give an example.

Further to last week’s call for young Irish chess players.

John McMorrow, chairman of the Irish Chess Union, writes:

The Espion Irish Junior Chess Championships [starting tomorrow at the Fitzpatrick Hotel, Killiney, Co Dublin] now has 140 confirmed junior entrants and we hope to see a final number of somewhere around 200 with entries on the day.

There’ll be events for all ages with competitions from Under 8s all the way up to under 19s as well as a competition for teachers and parents.

Games start at 7pm on Friday evening for the u12-u19s and will finish on Sunday alongside several one day rapid-play events for u8s-u12s.

As well as the main events, there will also be an outdoor plastic giant board and pieces available for fun games, lessons for beginners and a lecture/Q/A session from the parent of Grand Master Gawain Jones on the challenges and privilege of being the parent of a top chess player.

John McMorrow writes:

I know you don’t normally do this… but I am the Chairperson of the Irish Chess Union and we will soon be running the Espion Irish Junior Chess Championships. It will be held from the 1-3 April and as an added bonus we will be offering any student who is entering their first ICU event a free chess set and board to give to their school. The event will be held in the Fitzpatrick Castle Hotel, Killiney, Co. Dublin.

Further details of our offer can be found here.

We would highlight the three 1-day competitions on Sunday 3rd, the Irish U-8 championships and the u10 and u12 challengers “rapid” events. These three events are for those less used to longer games with games lasting 30 minutes. Players will receive the same amount of games as they are never knocked out of an event. There are also other attractions on Sunday such as talks, coaching and even a competition for parents and teachers.
