Protesters against the new runway over noise issues at the official sod-turning for Dublin Airport’s North Runway in February, 2019

THis morning.

Restrictions on nighttime flights and a noise quota system are part of the plans for the operation of the new north runway at Dublin Airport

Via John Kilraine:

The proposals being put forward by the The Aircraft Noise Competent Authority (ANCA) are similar to those proposed by the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA).

There would be a complete ban on flights on the new north runway between midnight and 6am, apart from exceptional circumstances.

This would still allow flights during the busiest times at Dublin Airport, which are between 11pm and 11.30pm and 6am and 7am.

Dr. Mary Favier, President of the Irish College of General Practitioners

This morning.

Morning Ireland on RTÉ Radio One.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, Dr Mary Favier [Covid-19 advisor to the Irish College of GPs] said that despite soaring infection rates the health service is “holding steady, just”, but everything in the health system is under strain and said “we really do need to look at how we want to achieve things in the next number of weeks and into Christmas”.

She called for a return to social solidarity in the coming weeks, saying a peak in the current wave of infection might not happen before December.

Dr Favier said people need to look at how to manage social interactions and gatherings “and just try and do less in the next week or two”.

Dr. Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer at the Department of Health this afternoon

This afternoon.

Department of Health, Dublin 2.

Via RTÉ News:

The Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan said NPHET has been very clear that people need to be mindful about social contacts; that they need to be halved in order to get transmission of the virus under control.

He said the chance of someone “bumping into the virus” while out is “very high“.

However…

A key difference between this and last Christmas is that most of the population is vaccinated – that allows so much of society to remain open, Dr Holohan said.

This morning/afternoon.

Tuam, county Galway.

Via The Irish Catholic:

Pope Francis has appointed Archbishop-elect Francis Duffy to succeed the retiring Archbishop of Tuam Michael Neary,…

The archbishop-elect was “surprised and humbled” by the announcement, he told the congregation gathered at the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Tuam, Galway.

In his address, he added that for the Church to move forward, “we must listen to all who have been hurt by their experience of Church”, while paying testimony to the “vital role” of the clergy”.

Meanwhile…

Primate of All-Ireland Archbishop Eamon Martin wished Dr Duffy “every blessing” in his new role, saying:

“He has already made significant contributions to the Bishops’ Conference in the fields of finance and administration, Catholic education, liturgy, pastoral renewal and adult faith development.

“With the help of God’s grace, and with the support and prayers of the faithful, he will now bring these gifts to the service of the Church in the West of Ireland.”
