Nicha – Devices

Log out, turn off, step back.

That’s the message of the debut single by Nicha (top), a 22-year-old singer/songwriter from Holywood, County Down.

A commentary on the negative aspects of social media and our growing obsession with our smartphones, Nicha takes inspiration from the likes of Moloko and Bonobo.

Nick says: The star of the County Down.

The votes are in.

Last week, with a stunning €25 Golden Disc voucher on offer, I asked you to name a particular song you initially disliked but then grew to admire.

You answered in your tens.

But there could be only one winner

Third Place:

Honey Bear I Love You by Father John Misty

Friscondo writes:

I Did not know what to make of this, when I first heard it. His name, the song title and the lush strings really grated on my nerves. Just didn’t get it. The more I heard of him the more I liked his take on everything. Happy to now say I’m a huge fan of all Mr Tillman’s work, and I think I can see where he’s coming from….

Runner-up

The Man Comes Around by Johnny Cash

Golden Brown writes:

I’ve always had an aversion to C+W music…probably because I’m rooted in Punk/Ska and my father used to be into it, would always have it’s whiney twangy assault on in the car or the living room and I hated him for all sorts of (resolved) reasons I’m not going to get into her, but you get the picture.

I also had mates at that time who would frequently nod appreciation for Johnny Cash (but only really because they believed it was a tosser nerdy NME subscriber badge wearer thing to do) but as it happens into my 30’s I mellowed to JC and at certain moments I’ll throw him on the deck (only JC mind no other C+W whine allowed!) I want thissong played at my funeral.

Winner:

Is This Desire? by PJ Harvey

Janet, I Ate My Avatar writes:

initially I didn’t like this at all, now I love the dark tones and the lyrics, every time I play it it brings me back to a different life…

Nick says: Thanks all.

Clodagh – You Got Me

Ready to jump on the soulful pop train?

Born in Rhode Island, USA, but long a native of Macroom, County Cork, Clodagh’s new single is a polished gem with an arty lyric video by Tara Murphy.

Clodagh (top) says:

“You Got Me is about growing as a person and the struggle that can present when you have to let people go in life, that feeling of people being infatuated by a person that you shouldn’t and resisting temptations.”

Nick says: Macroom at the top.

Clodagh

Hic.

What replaced The Hamlet?

That is the question.

Kayne West in The White House, Washington DC, USA last year

This afternoon.

Further to his Presidential bid….

….Rapper Kayne West reveals to Forbes:

That he’s running for president in 2020 under a new banner—the Birthday Party—with guidance from Elon Musk and an obscure vice presidential candidate he’s already chosen. “Like anything I’ve ever done in my life,” says West, “I’m doing to win.”

That he no longer supports President Trump. “I am taking the red hat off, with this interview.”

That he’s ok with siphoning off Black votes from the Democratic nominee, thus helping Trump. “I’m not denying it, I just told you. To say that the Black vote is Democratic is a form of racism and white supremacy.”

That he’s never voted in his life.

That he was sick with Covid-19 in February.

That he’s suspicious of a coronavirus vaccine, terming vaccines “the mark of the beast.”

That he believes “Planned Parenthoods have been placed inside cities by white supremacists to do the Devil’s work.”

That he envisions a White House organizational model based on the secret country of Wakanda – in Black Panther (2018)…

BECAH – Forget

Breaking up is hard to do.

That’s the message of the new single by BECAH, a promising young singer/songwriter from Lurgan, County Armagh.

BECAH says:

“Forget’ tells the story of a messy break-up. It reflects on how one person in the relationship can be left still loving the other, whilst having to accept its bitter end and making that difficult return back to the strangers you once were.”

Nick says: A Northern star is born.

BECAH

More leg room then.
