Late Late Show host Ryan Tubridy

Via RTÉ:

The Late Late Show is looking forward to welcoming our studio audience back when it is safe to do so. We are hoping that will happen during our upcoming season, which begins in September.

At present for the Health and Safety of RTÉ staff and crew working on our live programmes, we are only accepting applications from people who will be fully vaccinated at the time of broadcast.

Proof of vaccination will be required for admission to TV Studios.

Stay home or is the little prick worth it?

Only you can decide.

The votes are in.

Last Friday, with a suggestion from Scottser and a €50 Golden Discs voucher on offer, I asked you to name your favourite one-hit wonder.

You answered in your many dozens creating a sole-hit strewn playlist for the ages.

But there could be only one winner.

Third Place:

Rapper’s Delight by The Sugarhill Gang

Penfold writes:

“Whether or not it’s the best one hit wonder, it’s definitely one of my favourites and possibly the most important.”

Runner-up:

Swords Of A Thousand Men by Tenpole Tudor

Gary Flood writes:

“Men larking about in a field with weapons and chainmail. And a horse.
Gotta be Tenpole Tudor and “Swords of a Thousand Men”. Innit?”

Winner:

Mary’s Prayer by Danny Wilson

Friscondo writes:

“A sublime piece of soul/pop that immediately brightens your day when it comes on the radio. Hard to believe that they didn’t follow it up with more hits, although writer Gary Clark went on to write for a host of others, from Natalie Imbruglia to Loyd Cole.”

Nick says: Well done Frscondo and thanks all.

Mia Yermeche – Butterflies

Love is like a butterfly…

Classically trained, Irish r’n’b singer Mia Yermeche (top) announces herself on the scene with her slinky debut single produced by Chris Kabs.

Mia writes:

“It’s about the initial stage of a relationship where you are pretty much head over heels for someone and in your eyes they can simply do no wrong, your basically blinded by the infatuation that you feel for them”.

Nick says: Winging it.

Dublin City Council Chief Executive Owen Keegan

This afternoon.

A petition calling for the removal of Dublin City Council CEO Owen Keegan launched yesterday is gathering signatures.

Petitioner Jamie Doyle writes:

Owen P. Keegan was appointed Dublin City Chief Executive in September 2013

In his time at DCC he has made countless decisions based on his own logic to disapprove Dublin. These actions include his crusade to remove any height and sustainable living in Dublin City, closing off public spaces without public consultation, prioritising cars and car park owners over pedestrians, the lack of pedestrianisation in the city, public pressure was needed for any streets to be pedestrianised, filthy streets which are covered with litter and graffiti, and a lack of public services such as bins and toilets.

Even though the majority of councillors are in favour of all these items Owen Keegan continues to act in an undemocratic manner. He recently wrote to Lord Mayor Hazel Chu to inform her that he will be extending his contract by 3 years without any public consultation or vote.

In the absence of a democratically elected Head of Dublin City Council, I am calling on all Dublin City Councillors to put forward a vote of ‘No Confidence’ in Owen Keegan.

FIGHT!

This morning

The Chief Executive of the National Concert Hall has said it is likely that concert-goers attending next week’s event at the Iveagh Gardens will be given antigen tests for Covid-19 before entry.

The outdoor event on 10 June, which will be headlined by James Vincent McMorrow, will be all-standing, with pods marked out to ensure social distancing.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, Robert Read said he is honoured to be able to present this “extraordinary concert” and lead the cultural sector and connect audiences with artists again.

Let’s make this precious.

Dublin songsmith and writer Emma Hynes knocks it out of the park with her debut single which has just been released across multiple digital platforms. It comes with a sumptuously shot video to boot which features nature in all its glory. The sleeve design (top) is by Donny Keane.

The song was produced, engineered, mixed and mastered by Martin Quinn at JAM Studios in Kells, County Meath.

Emma (acoustic guitar and vocals) was joined by Andrew Quinn (drums and percussion) and Martin Quinn (bass guitar, keyboard, electric guitars and string arrangement).

Emma writes:

“As a music fan, my hope is that Don’t Forget resonates with you, for a song that does is a precious thing.”

Hook – Best Days

Those were the days?

Hook are a Dublin-based New Wave ensemble featuring Eoin O’Donnell (vocals, guitar), Morgan O’Brien (drums) and Danny Spelman (bass, vocals). Their new single was self-recorded in the band’s home studio.

Eoin writes:

“The song is an autobiographical account of being a young person or in college. For some, it’s a very lonely and isolating time. Everyone is telling you that these are the best days and years of your life, but more often than not it doesn’t feel that way. There’s so many expectations to be social and interesting, but most people in fact have trouble making friends or feeling accepted.”

Nick says: Nobody told me there’d be days like these.
