squid

A composite image derived from footage (above) of a giant, elbowed Magnapinna (Bigfin squid) filmed in 2007 by an ROV at a Shell oil drilling site two and a half kilometers below the Gulf of Mexico.

Once they learn to hover above ground, we’re all doomed.

Two-bugs-that-have-been-having-sex-for-165-million-yearsThe world’s oldest fossilised evidence of insect sex – two Anthoscytina perpetua found locked together, preserved in the sediment of a Mongolian lake – recently discovered by a research team from China’s Capital Normal University, who have hypothesised that the pair were blown into a lake in flagrante after being killed by volcanic gases.

The dirty feckers.

Foster conceived the project last year in the course of another commission. Sez he:

“While running through all the images that were shot I would find myself laughing out loud at how great the expressions were that some of the dogs had while licking in studio. The best way to describe it would be an ‘a-ha’ moment, I just kept thinking to myself, ‘this would be a great book!’”

A visceral take on the spirit of competition, where sprinters transform into their aggressive animal counterparts to survive and win.
