A new ‘super-hydrophobic’ surface developed by researchers at Rochester University’s Institute Of Optics that makes water bounce off as if repelled by a magnetic force.
Unlike previous temporarily water-repelling surfaces (like Teflon), this permanently hydrophobic material consists of metal into whose surface microscopic structures are etched with lasers.
Possible applications include waterless toilets, rustproofing and airplane wings that repel ice.

MIT explains the science behind petrichor, the earthy scent released when rain falls on dry soil. To wit:
MIT researchers observed that when a raindrop hits a surface, it traps tiny air bubbles at the point of contact. As in a glass of champagne, the bubbles then shoot upward, ultimately bursting from the drop in a fizz of aerosols. The researchers suspect that in natural environments, aerosols may carry aromatic elements, along with bacteria and viruses stored in soil. These aerosols may be released during light or moderate rainfall, and then spread via gusts of wind.

The Aposematic jacket, according to its creator Shinseungback Kimyonghun is a:
‘wearable camera for self-defense. The lenses on the jacket give off the warning signal, “I can record you”, to prevent possible attack. When the wearer pushes a button under threat, the jacket records the scene in 360 degrees and sends the images to the Web.’
Subtle.

By animator Yukai Du. To wit:
This animation is based on a familiar game — Musical Chairs. The main character in this animation represents the human race. The human, in his selfish ways, discovers that he can’t bear the consequences of his own actions. This animation is also trying to depict a society in which people constantly want to get more and more to fulfill their insatiable desires. Maybe the humans win, but perhaps they lose something of greater importance.
