Blackrock, Co Dublin this morning.

Ireland’s first (of many) JD Wetherspoon [soulless if cheap UK chain] pub.

Laura writes:

“The Three Tun Tavern in Blackrock, on the site of the former Tonic Bar on the junction of Temple Road and Carysfort Avenue in Blackrock Co Dublin. The bar is the British chain pub’s first venture in the Republic and has caused a stir already by deciding not to serve Guinness when it opens on Tuesday the 8th of July, as the price point sought by Diageo was too high. It will however serve Murphy’s and Beamish at a cost of €3.95  per pint…”

How much?

A warm Summer salad for FOUR?

Bollox Never..

YES according to fresh new blogger The Irish Food Dude.

He writes:

This rough & ready salad is delicious, easy to make & relatively healthy! I cooked two medium sized steaks for four people, cut them up and threw them on top. It’s a good way to cut back on the red meat without depriving yourself. Swapping steak for chicken or tuna steak is another delicious way to mix it up!
The Cast
-2 medium sized steaks of your choice
-Garlic & 2 Red Onions
-Vine Tomatoes
-Leaves (I like rocket and purple winter leaves)
-Buffalo Mozzarella
-Large Asparagus blades
-Lemon Juice, Balsamic Vinegar, Olive Oil, Sea Salt

The Script:
Crush a few cloves of garlic and throw them in a roasting tin with the vine tomatoes & roughly chopped red onion. Add olive oil and sea salt. Put it on a highish heat and let them crisp up. Add some balsamic vinegar for some extra flavour while the onions caramelise.
Blanch the asparagus in some boiling water for about 2-3 minutes. Add some lemon juice, salt and black pepper to them in a bowl. Throw the asparagus blades on the BBQ and cook the steaks. (I will do a post soon about how I like to get a perfect steak on the BBQ!)

Show Time:
When everything is cooked, assemble the salad to your liking. Slice the Mozzarella into pieces, douse your leaves in a nice vinaigrette dressing and add the rest on top…”

The food dude would like YOU to recommend a suitable wine to accompany the above. Anyone?

iron-cage

Cromwellian Dublin.

No city for slackers/businesswomen.

“… it is therefore ordered and agreed upon, by the authorities aforesaid, that there be beadles appointed in every parish of this city to be maintained by the inhabitants of each parish, and that forthwith there shall be a large cage set in the Cornmarket, where the beadles and constables are to imprison all beggars, idle women and maids selling apples and oranges and all idle boys and all other idlers, who are to be kept there until they shall be examined and punished.. the said cage to be built at the city’s charge.”

From the Dublin Assembly Roll,, 1659

Sibling of Daedalus writes:

“No sign of the Cage (situated at the junction of High Street and Thomas Street, Dublin) remains today; it was destroyed when King Charles II (a monarch with a soft spot for idlers and orange-sellers) returned to the throne the following year…Those unfortunate enough to end up in the Great Cage were, if they were lucky. and thought capable of reform, released after ‘chastisement’. The truly irredeemable idlers, on the other hand, were transported to the West Indies to work as indentured labourers. Broadsheet commenters take note…”

Of this drum ‘n’ bottle cover of Toto’s 1982 hit, Danish blown-bottle beatniks
The Bottle Boys (aka Flaskedrengen) sez:

We really love Toto’s ‘Africa’. The melody is amazing and there is also this great solo in the middle, which fitted perfectly with our new instrument: The Bottle Xylophone. We have played the song for a while, but we have never made it into a video.
