The Defusable Clock, $43 from nootropic design:

…is a fully-functional alarm clock just like you’d expect (a normal beeping alarm, snooze alarm, etc.). But at any time you can press the big red button to start a scary countdown sequence exactly like bombs in Hollywood movies.

There are 4 wires across the top of the clock. You have 10 seconds to choose the correct wire to cut: one wire stops the countdown and saves the day, two have no effect, and one will “detonate” the device immediately. These role of each wire is randomly assigned when the detonate button is pressed, so it’s a new challenge every time.

Only the electronics are provided. You design your own explosive device. For inspiration, there’s an extensive Gallery of Defusable Clocks.

On Fourth Lake in New York’s Adirondacks, a crush of 1,902 canoes and kayaks attempts to break a “largest raft” world record. Rules dictate that the megastructure float freely for at least 30 seconds, held together only by hands.

A Fine Gael TD has asked the Central Statistics Office (CSO) for information on the number of people who claimed their religion was that of ‘Jedi knight’ in last year’s Census.

Dublin Deputy Eoghan Murphy made the request (yesterday) at a sitting of the Dáil Public Accounts Committee.

He queried whether the Census form returns inaccurate data, as it would allow people to indicate a religion which was not a recognised faith.

You mean like the Pagan Federation and the Spiritualist Union?

I’ve started up this blog on tumblr of Things I’ve Found On Top Of Bus Shelters I’ve always noticed the weird things you would see on your way around Dublin on the bus every day and decided recently to start photographing them.
I only have about 12 so far but I thought it would be good to get people to submit photos of peculiar things that they see on bus tops. It would be great to get featured on Broadsheet and get more people involved.

Typesetter Luke Benge of Beat Magazine, one of the premier ‘street press’ magazines in Australia. was about to leave the title and go to New York this week.

“On his last day of work, he takes the Kaiser Chiefs off the cover of Beat Magazine and puts a caricature of himself naked. Sends it off to the publishers hoping that they won’t pick it up and they’ll run it on the 40,000 copies of Beat Mag’ all around Melbourne and sure enough he’s pulled it off.”

How unsettling?

I basically killed my father. or at least intentionally  allowed him to die.

He was an abusive father all my life, and when I was 19, he had a heart attack. I calmly took the phone away from him before he could dial 911, put the recliner he was sitting in up so he would be laying back and his weight would make it harder to breathe, took one last look right at him, then left the room.

About an hour or so later I found him sitting there staring forward with foam in his mouth, not breathing.

I should clarify that I had been working at a hospital for at least 4 years at that point (volunteer work) and I was first aid certified. I knew exactly what was happening, and what I was doing.

Right.
