Bad news for the ‘Global Britain’ Brexiters (FT)

Nigel Farage launching the Brexit Party earlier this month

The YouGov survey for The Times put the party launched by the former Ukip leader last week on 23 per cent, a point in front of Labour and five ahead of the Tories, and appeared to confirm the result of a shock poll published on Wednesday…

The revisions reflect a deterioration in the main markets that Irish firms export to, particularly the UK due in large part to Brexit uncertainty and the euro area where the economic cycle has peaked sooner-than-expected.

It also points to a softening in US growth in the short-term as the impact of fiscal stimulus there fades.

Some domestic indicators have also moderated in recent months, it says.

From top: the offending article in The Spectator; Ireland’s UK ambassador Adrian O’Neill and his letter to the magazine’s editor

Last night.

A diplomatic response to ‘ cheese-eating surrender monkey’ accusations leveled at Ireland in The Spectator by the suitably-named, Robert Hardman.

To wit:

Hardman said that Ireland was joining a group of “flimsily-connected” countries with “deplorable human rights records” and “French-speaking crooks”, some of whom, he added, appeared “at the bottom of every global corruption index”.

“Only the mean-spirited would suggest that little Leo will do anything to suck up to the top gang in the EU playground…,” he continued.

How odd, then, to see the Irish — usually so quick to take offence at any whiff of imperialism — acting as a cheerleader for French aggrandisement.”

Revenue tweetz:

Customs Officers providing information to truck drivers in Dublin Ports this morning to ensure they understand and are aware of the changes that Brexit will mean for their journeys.

It follows Revenue releasing a statement this morning saying Customs Officers will be talking with truck drivers at ports in Dublin and Rosslare.

Lynda Slattery, Head of Revenue’s Brexit Policy Unit, said:

“It is crucially important that truck drivers are aware of, and understand, what they will need to do and what paperwork they will have to provide at check-in, before boarding the ferry.

“This will ensure that trucks can move through our ports with minimum disruption and delay. If a truck driver does not have the right documentation, then he or she will not be allowed to board the ferry and will be delayed, perhaps for a considerable time.

“Of particular importance for drivers arriving on ferries into Ireland is knowing where they need to go if the goods they are transporting need to be checked by Customs.

“Drivers must check whether they are free to leave the port on arrival or if they must call to Customs. This check can be done quickly on revenue.ie/roro, 20 minutes prior to docking. We have produced a clear and helpful leaflet that sets out how the process will work.

“It is important to be aware of the procedures and requirements for transporting goods to, from or through the UK post-Brexit.

“This minimises the risk of your business and drivers being seriously and substantially impacted and will ensure that the majority of goods continue to move freely through our ports.”

I returned to the madness of Parliament Square [Westminster, London] on ‘Brexit Day’ to witness, in this case, history not being made, as the UK was due to leave the EU on this day, March 29. Above is a flavor of some of that day featuring multiple protests by different groups…

A Limerick A Day

“I’ve always said I’m going to fight until the last hour… so we can see an orderly exit,” German Chancellor Angela Merkel (top) said last night  on the eve of an Ireland visit, warning that avoiding a hard border was a matter of preserving the peace.

Speaking at a Berlin press conference, said that an orderly Brexit would be “in interest of Britain but also in our interest”.

She said that, because of the related issue of avoiding a new “hard border” between British Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, it would also affect “peace in Ireland”.

Therefore it was “a question of violence or no violence and here we naturally want to make a contribution,” Merkel said.
