[John F Kennedy during his visit to Limerick in 1963]

A special meeting [of Limerick City Council] ground to a halt on Friday after solicitors acting for Cllr Pat Kennedy indicated that he would start legal proceedings if plans to rename abridge in honour of John F Kennedy were not upheld.
…
One of the public at the meeting Michael Punch, Patrickswell, thinks it is “ridiculous” to rename the Shannon Bridge after JFK.

“Why should we name it after an American president who did not really do anything for our city, when there are so many who have done things for Limerick” he asked.

But Michael Leech, O’Connell Avenue disagreed: “It might attract some of the Kennedy family to the city, and the entourage they would bring.”

clearance

Jürgen Henn of Durham North Carolina has been documenting the ongoing cargo truck carnage at the 11′ 8″ (3.5m) high underside of a railway overpass on his blog 11 Foot Eight. Sez he:

Clearance can be a real challenge for a truck driver. Especially inexperienced drivers of rental box trucks seem to be quite oblivious to the warning signs and flashing “overheight” warning lights at this railroad trestle in Durham, NC. So frequently do trucks crash into the 11-foot-8 clearance trestle, that the railroad company installed a crash beam in front of it. This massive steel I-beam bears the brunt of the impact, protecting the structure that supports this fairly busy railroad track. Believe it or not – they already had to replace the beam once!

“When finished, the bridge will carry a single southbound tram track in the centre and two southbound bus and cycle lanes either side, one lane going straight on to Marlborough Street, the other turning right and heading towards O’Connell Bridge.”

The Irish Times’ southbound only Liffey bridge.

What, no passport controls?

Also: FIGHT!

New but nameless, we can cross that Liffey bridge when we come to it (in February) (Olivia Kelly, Irish Times)

bridgeThe yet to be named bridge at Marlborough Street, Dublin, moments ago.

This does not look good.

Michael O’Riordan writes:

Not sure what’s going on but all work on the new bridge has stopped while a small crowd look on, amid much pointing and waving of hands.

Anyone?
