What you may need to know.

1. Al Pacino! Christopher Walken! And Alan Arkin? Say no more.

2. They should have called it ‘Auld Fellas.

3. Pacino and Walken were both in the infamous Gigli (2003), but they’ve never shared the screen before.

4. The trailer looks better than anticipated. We’re reminded of the Cassavetes/Falk flick Mikey And Nicky (1976).

5. Hey, Al’s been in a lot of toss over the years, but he can still bring it, as anyone who has seen You Don’t Know Jack (2010) will testify. He’s doing Glengarry Glen Ross on Broadway this winter (in the role Jack Lemmon played in the movie) and has a Phil Spector biopic in the can. Hoo-haa! Take that, Bobby De Niro!

Release Date: January (U.S.)

What you really need to know:

1. This is the ‘trailer’ for the film that inspired the ongoing mayhem in Egypt and Libya, resulting in the deaths of four US personnel, including the American Ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stephens. Watch more here.

2. The film is directed by ‘Sam Bacile’ – believed to be a pseudonym for an anti-Muslim zealot – one thing’s for sure, he’s not a filmmaker.

3. It takes a ‘satirical’ look at the life of Mohammad. Oh dear.

4. The mystery of the film’s creation is ongoing – unsurprisingly, no-one’s in any hurry to take the credit right now.

5. How did an inept piece of anti-Islamic propaganda, one that received a single empty screening in an LA cinema, cause this much trouble? Ask Pastor Terry Jones.

6. This clip has been blocked on You Tube in Egypt and Libya.

Release Date: Don’t go there.

What you may need to know.

1. Hitchcock biopics are so hot right now. This is the one that doesn’t have Anthony Hopkins in it.

2. Toby Jones plays Hitch here: he’s one of the most reliable character actors in the game these days – AND his Dad’s in Emmerdale.

3. Remember Sienna Miller? She’s best remembered for her co-starring role as Jude Law’s girlfriend and, more recently, her role in the News International hacking scandal.

4. Hitchcock’s Vertigo was voted The Best Film EVER Made in the prestigious Sight & Sound poll earlier this year: our own choice, Sam Raimi’s seminal Evil Dead 2 (1978) (1987), failed to make the Top 100, thus making the entire poll utterly redundant.

Release date: October (TV)

What you may need to know:

1. Love the scary introduction by Liam Neeson.

2. Neeson is now OFFICIALLY the screen’s baddest badass.

4. Lest we forget, Neeson provided the finest TV moment of 2011 AND 2012.

5. Neeson is in the mix for a Death Wish (1974) remake. Stick a ‘tache on him, and he’s the Ballymena Chaz Bronson.

What you may need to know:

1. Yes, this is a real movie.

2. RENNER! J-Ren has three franchises in his pocket. He’s aiming for a fourth. Possible overstretching alert.

3. They shot this one ages ago, then postponed the release for nine months in the hope of cashing in on the success of The Avengers (2012) and The Bourne Whatsit (2012).

4. Who’s Gretel? It’s British actress Gemma Arterthon, who drowned in oil in Quantum Of Solace (2008). She stars in Neil Jordan’s new vampire movie, Byzantium (2012). And was born with six fingers on each hand. Seriously.

6. Who knew HAN-sel and Gretel were American. And why is everybody else European?

7. That said, the presence of Swedish character Peter Stormare is always a good thing. Where is pancakes house?

8. Remember Terry Gilliam’s The Brothers Grimm (2005)? Pretty poor. It had Stormare in it, too.

What you may need to know:

1. it’s been a long time since anyone went to see a Robert Redford movie. The Sundance Kid had a killer run in the ’70s, then made some fine movies as a director and and founded the most influential film festival this side of Cannes. That doesn’t mean we forgive him for The Horse Whisperer (1998).

2. The Company You Keep sees Redford in Three Days Of The Condor (1975) mode, by way of All The President’s Men (1976).

3. Seriously killer cast. And Shia LeBeouf.

4. Greatest Living Irish Screen Actor @ 1’50 (or thereabouts).

5. That’s meant to be his daughter? He’s 76, FFS.

Release Date: October (U.S.)

What you may need to know:

1. British director Ben Wheatley put himself on the radar with outre hitman flick The Kill List (2011). We recommend you track it down immediately, along with his earlier lo-fi gangland saga Down Terrace (2009). Think Mike Leigh with a body count.

2. Sightseers was written by its stars, Steve Oram and Alice Lowe: if you can’t quite place the faces, they’ve been in various episodes of Might Boosh, The IT Crowd and the sublime Horrible Histories.

3. Extra points for splendid use of not one, but two ’80s classics.

4. Psychotic gingers are so in this season.

5. ‘He’s not a person, Tina, he’s a Daily Mail reader.’

Release Date (Ireland): November

What you may need to know:

1. Citadel is a new Irish horror movie. It was filmed in Glasgow. Interesting review here.

2. It’s produced by Blinder Films. They’ve done everything from David McSavage’s The Savage Eye to Tom Hall‘s Sensation (2010), which you should definitely catch up with one of these days.

3. The cast includes veteran Scots actor James Cosmo, who’s been in Game Of Thrones and those Irish episodes of Sons Of Anarchy of late. He played Renton’s Dad in Trainspotting (1996) and was in Scottish soap opera, Take The High Road.

4. It’s been winning prizes all over the shop.

5. From Silence (2012) to Grabbers (2012), 2012 has been a decent year for Irish film thus far. Now all people have to do is go and see them.
