The Dart

Erin Fornoff writes:

On Thursday I left my (red, beat up-looking) wallet on the Dart. It had a good bit of money it (unusually), my house key, and pretty much everything I need to survive including Irish ID, etc. Yesterday someone turned it in to the station with all the cash in it and everything else. He left his name as “John Joe” and put down a random fake number. I am assuming it was the Olympic Champion boxer. Even if it isn’t the Olympic champion boxer, I am dying to thank the hell out of whoever brought it back! THANK YOU JOHN JOE. YOU ARE THE GREATEST MAN ALIVE.

Anyone?

Dublin People reports:

Irish Rail has confirmed that electronic cigarettes are now banned from all its DART and train services. The company says it made the decision following complaints from passengers, even though there’s no evidence the devices cause any harm to anybody standing close to those using them.

FIGHT!

The results are in.

A Dublin Area Rapid Transit survey of North Wicklow commuters by Fine Gael TD Simon Harris to be presented to Irish Rail. He writes:

I was pleased that in excess of 400 people took the time to complete this survey and it leaves me in no doubt as to the strength of feeling amongst commuters about a range of issues.

I have now sought and secured a meeting with the Chief Executive of Irish Rail for later this month. At this meeting I will be presenting the survey results to him and seeking assurances on issues of concerns.

FIGHT!

Fair play though, in fairness.

Then you may like this project called DART of Physics, led by Professor Shane Bergin, from the School of Physics and CRANN at Trinity College Dublin.

He and his team are giving online physics lessons for DART commuters.

This cannot end well.

They write:

“Over the course of eight weeks, starting on the 21st of October 2013, we’ll turn Dublin’s DART into our own laboratory and get the city thinking and talking about physics.”

“Discover and learn scientific concepts through tricky teasers, mind-melting facts and seemingly illogical questions that will be scattered throughout the DART. All you’ll have to do is look around you on your journey.”

“And if you want to know more, that’s what this website is for. Updated throughout the campaign, we’ll be blogging, responding to your questions and releasing interactive, illustrated stories that go deeper into the the lessons on the DART.”

“We promise you, this will not be the physics you avoided in school.”

Peak time DARTs normally operate with a mix of 8-carriage, 6-carriage and 4-carriage trains. The effect of this issue will be that most DARTs will operate as a 4-carriage train, and a small number will operate as a 2-carriage train.  We apologise for the inconvenience caused.

This is due to a refusal by drivers to carry out a coupler check before DART trains leave the depot to enter service.

This check verifies that an electrical connection is complete through the train when multiple DART units are connected together.  It has been necessitated by a number of incidents in which drivers received false indications on door interlocking.

The check is temporary in nature, as a modification is to be carried out to the fleet which will address the issue.  Drivers had been carrying out the check since its introduction last month. However, following SIPTU indicating, outside of agreed procedures, that it would no longer cooperate with this check, they are not being carried out by drivers today resulting in shorter trains.
