Store Street Garda Station and Debenhams, Henry Street, Dublin

Outside Store Street Garda Station are Debenhams sit-in supporters and workers who were arrested by Gardai earlier after occupying the store.

The launch of a national demonstration this Saturday calling for the support of some 1,000 workers who were laid off by Debenhams and told that the company does not have sufficient assets to fund their agreed redundancy package.

Debenhams workers protesting outside the Henry Street branch of the chain calling for government action to save their jobs a day before a liquidation hearing for Debenhams on Thursday. A previous demonstration at the branch was dispersed by Garda officers over Covid-19 fears.

Further to Debenhams saying its Irish outlets that it would not be affected by the company’s decision to place its UK outlets into administration and that it planned to reopen its Irish stores after the Covid-19 restrictions are lifted…

Barry Whyte, in the Business Post, reports:

Debenhams has told its staff it is pulling out of Ireland and will not reopen its 11 shops around the country.

In a letter to staff this morning, the troubled department store chain said it would be appointing a liquidator to the Irish arm of the company next week.

It closed its British and Irish stores at the end of last month because of Covid-19 restrictions, and the company is appointing an administrator.
